FYI from BMW AG:
BMW Motorrad posted another major increase in sales in July and continued on its growth track. Against the persistent downward trend in the motorcycle segment over 500 cc, BMW Motorrad sales rose by 4.4% to 10,022 (prev. yr. 9,604) units in July. With its young and attractive range of models, BMW Motorrad reported sales growth of 18.5% to 67,037 (prev. yr. 56,578) vehicles in the year to the end of July. The large long-distance enduro, the BMW R 1200 GS, remains the best-selling model in the BMW motorcycle range. The GS will be celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. It is the most successful BMW motorcycle ever built and has become the world’s best-selling motorcycle in the 500 cc and above range. Asked my local BMW shop a couple of months ago how things were.... he said sales were up 15%+ over last year...not too shabby in this economy... lots of GS/GSAs still lurking around the shop though...

Yeah, but on the other side, they are shooting themselves in the foot again by unwise and incomprehensible tactics when it comes to the S1000RR.
The dealers who are selling the bikes well, can not get any more bikes because BMW NA is not importing any more bikes until they are gone from ALL the showroom floors. Of course there are dealers out there who HAD to take some of those and have a hard time selling them because of demographics. Needless to say that it would be reasonably easy to re-allocate these bikes, but the politics at NA make it tougher than one would think it should be. It almost seems like they don't want to sell more bikes. To date, they have brought some 700+ S1000RR's into the US and the bike is doing reasonably well, all things considered. Anyone with half a brain would try to get as many bikes into the channel as they could, riding that wave of enthusiasm... not so BMW NA. As it were, they are better than the rest. I had to laugh when I read the Article about de Waal in the last ON. Unfortunately, it is their politics (the ON's, that is), to NOT write anything negative (or objective, in this case) about any BMW dealers or NA, for that matter. Naturally, as they would lose revenue... who cares about objective reporting, right? Good to hear that BMW MC is doing well overall, though, despite trying hard not to.

Most dealers have S1000RR's on the floor, many have multiple colors available. I have no idea why BMW would want to flood the market with more production when there is plenty of inventory on the floor. Walk into virtually any BMW dealer and they can have you in the seat of a S1000RR within a few days, if not a few hours.
BMW has handled the S1000RR's intro about as well as can be done. Not perfectly of course, but very very nicely. They're doing fine with this model and the R bikes in general. The problem children are the K's and the non-GS F's. If you want to look at a marketing gaffe, I'd point to the stupidity of naming the F800GS and F650GS (actually 800cc) twins, especially since the later designation confuses it with the old F650GS single. Whomever came up with this scheme needs to have their head examined. - Mark Last edited by markjenn; 08-10-2010 at 02:29 PM.. |

I could name quite a few dealers off the bat, Mark who'd like to differ on that... as I said, demographics.
Flooding and feeding into demand are two different things... in a market as short lived as this one, holding back might come back to bite you. But then, with all the success they had with the HP2X series, they can rest on their laurels for a while... you are right.

When I last visited our friends at the end of the runway in Marietta, Georgia a few weeks back, Bobby mentioned they'd sold 18 of the S1000RRs thus far.... limited only by the ability to get more of them in stock.

Why, you lookin' Bubba? Then you'd ride it a while, sell it, and I'd have to read another article about you in the ON!

Always lookin', Mal. I really like the '10 R12GS. No chance on the PRB wanna be, aka S1000RR.
