Stop Trying to Sell That 11S- It's Worth More If You Part It Out

Has anyone tried to buy parts (USED) for an R11S lately. I was going to replace the lightly damaged headlight this week and saw one on eBay. The bid started at $50.00. I say this looks like the time to pick up one for cheap. NO WAY, dude!!! When the bidding was over 42 bids later the headlight went for $291.01!! Yes, that less than new, Max has them new at $527.22 and you figure 10% off that if you order it from Chicago so there is some savings; only $100.00 less than new in the box! Supply side economics does work. If I ever decide to sell my 11S it's going to be one part at a time. Like the man said about the three legged pig, "a pig this good you don't eat all at once." I guess the same may go fo an old donkey bike. Jerry Duke got almost 6% on the selling price of some 11S's just for the system cases and mounting stuff. :D

Yeah, I've noticed this too. I figure my R11S is worth about $20k if you really take the time to part it out down the smallest components as many do on Ebay and at the Beemer Boneyard.

However, you do get lucky every once in a while. I was able to 'score' a new set of the Boxer Cup Replika lower cowl decals for 1/2 price on Ebay and a new OEM front panel for about 30% off typical retail.

No, no... nothing bad. Just holding the decals in reserve and swapping out the original front panel which has a pair of Wunderlich carbon air cooler duct grills installed. The new stock one will get the more discrete and reasonably-priced Hornig screen that sits behind the front panel.

Just never warmed-up to the Ilmberger duct covers and the right-hand side one doesn't like to get wet. Probably fine for a garage queen or Sunday driver, but not a daily driver that gets wet all the time. Yeah, I was surprised at how much those suckers sell for too...

Who cares about parts. I like the pig with three legs story! Had not heard that one before. :)

...the flaw in your calculation is that there are only a few parts THAT are actually popular (and the aforementioned system cases are optional, at that)... the rest will be very loyal to you!

Try selling the engine, tranny or frame components (other than the fairing sub frame)... same is valid for the gas tank, regular suspension, drive components (other than the occasional FD) and other parts.

Sell it as a whole, if you can...

yup, the popular farkles will sell, and the parts that get broke in tipovers, the rest will be on ebay forever.

Perfect example of the 80/20 rule, or why many businesses go out of business. 20% of stock sells, the other 80% sits, holding cash captive.

It's a Cee Bailey Touring Model, 18" in height

I'm only 5'8" and the 18" model directs the airflow to the top of my helmet, which is where I like it. I can hunker down in a more aggressive position to drop out of the airflow or sit up and forward to catch a little more air when I feel like it.

To be honest, I've never ridden with a stock windscreen. A very dark aftermarket windscreen that was a bit taller and that used a convex instead of a concave lip at the top was on the bike when I bought it and I opted to try the touring model vs. getting a direct replacement. I've been keeping my eyes on Ebay for an OEM model so that I can see how the original compares with the touring as the OEM model is a bit more minimal. The touring has been fine and the quality is exceptional, I'm just curious how the stock one handles the air flow.

Corky, you want to ship it to the east coast and try to sell it here? Maybe if we trade plastic, my black for your red. I hear black sells faster.;)

Corky 11-06-2010 07:42 PM

Are you serious? That might not be a bad idea. Even if I can never sell it, at least I could fool myself into thinking I have something new.
My plastic is PERFECT. a 2004
Is yours? what year?

I like Black. I like red too but new is always fun.

You aren't Chitting me are you?

Mine's a '99 and has 96k of normal wear and tear. Prolly a 8 outta 10. You'd be better off painting yours. Are you wanting to move to the 12S or HP2S or something more exotic like a 1198S?

No, I got rid of my Ducati 848 (great fun bike but a torture rack at best)
I now have one of them there new Ducati Multistrada 1200s. Covers all the bases for me.
Such a phenomenal bike. I passionately loved my R1100S for many years, but now when I ride it it just seems like a slug. I will be better off with someone who can really enjoy it....

I feel I could contribute to this thread...

I've nearly completed the part-out of my '02 Boxer Cup Prep. In its place, I purchased--yep, you guessed it--an '02 Boxer Cup Prep, with similar mileage in exactly the same color, for around $5k. So far, I've gotten about $3300 for parts with mostly motor left over; granted, I'm pricing low. I don't feel it's worth the PITA of parting, and if I could have avoided it, I probably would have.

I'll be sharing my sale price list for posterity when I've completed the part-out. I don't really expect I'll get the $5k I put into the replacement.

I'll bite, why did you go that route?

Multistrada 1200 Ride Report

Corky, I'd sure appreciate a good ride report on the Multi. Did you buy the sport or the touring model?
