That engine has a centrifugal oil filter in the lower right hand side engine cover-the round one. Make sure you clean that out after you change the oil and before you run it again.

Thanks, one of the other fortunate things about this bike is that it came with the original Honda service manual. I just noticed the oil "filter" the other day when reading through it. Also been reading through this guy's build - • View topic - 1970CB450

Garrett-

Hope this doesn't come across too negative. When setting your budget, remember the 450 will never have the value of your dad's bike. I know you are into this for the fun and glory but at some point in the future you might be disappointed at the return for your investment of work and money.

My GPZ550 was an excellent example. A lot better functionally than your dad's CB400F and in as good or better condition. However, even in perfect shape it was worth less.

I'll stop now, have fun.

Oh you're not being negative. I know that a mint 450 is only worth $2k. They just don't have the appeal the 400F does.

I got if for free and I'm not looking for a return on investment. I'm going to get the parts for the carbs ($60) and the ignition switch ($40 used) and then paint the frame myself (probably rattle can) and then polish the crap out of the aluminum (close to free) and then decide if it's worth a new tank and seat from Omar's ($600) or just repaint/seal the tank ($150) and make some new seat foam ($50).

So with a battery and some tires we're at either $510 OEM or $910 Cafe - and I realize this is a MINIMUM investment.

Oh crap and mufflers... So $760 or $1160. So let's cap the Cafe Racer budget at $1500 and the OEM budget at $1000.

It's all in fun - this is bike number 10 so no rush.

It's Christmas.
Maybe the money would be better spent on a present like a nice vacuum cleaner for the little lady?

She already got a Spot Brand titanium 29er frame for Christmas. Just won the Fox F29 FIT RLC fork for it on eBay a few hours ago.

Christmas comes when the deals come - even if that is months before the 25th of December.

She is an avid cyclist, and built like one too.. First time I met her she was wearing a Bontrager tee shirt, so I knew she was into bicycles. I think Garrett will be getting brownie points for that gift.

But the tank isn't so good - don't really like the shape anyway - I'm thinking cafe tank and seat in 2011
Don't give up on that tank till you soak it for 3 weeks in a molasses/water solution. A buddy of mine did this and results were remarkable:
