Brembo Blues!

I didn't like them as yellow, but blue sure does the trick!

Yeah, but 425 of them were about the Wösner Pistons and how good a job he did...

I'd think on a black bike that gloss black would look awesome. Regardless, certainly better than the washed out, dull black that the OEM paint turns into in about 2 minutes.

Shred, did you strip them first? Any concerns with heat retention?

Is the painting of calipers somehow more technical that he usual "drivel" around here?

Shreddr,

What bike are the calipers off of? The stock ones have BMW cast into them, where those appear to have Brembo painted on them. I bet they will work really nice once you hook hoses to them.

Sure it's technical. It aids heat retention. That's good, right?
Seriously, it's a street bike, and thus by definition, mostly for looks, so it's not as if it hurts anything particularly. If blue 'bos are to your taste, then it seems good.
We haven't been too technical for a long time, so what's the harm.

childish envy speaks.

Back to topic: I have the same concern as Roger: about heat retention. So I 'd have suggested against powder coating if I was asked. Brembo has a special paint for calipers.
Besides that: it looks great.

Brembo, as a vendor, will coat calipers based on what ever spec the manufacturer requests or is willing to pay for - one of the "cost" measures on the otherwise stellar Mitsubishi EVO is the Brembo calipers are painted.
Brembo offered red powder coat but it was more expensive so the calipers are simply painted red and then clear coated.
Be careful when you change the fluid - you know why.........
Needless to say, Brembo won't cover those calipers for surface finish degradation.

I picked up a spare set off Beemer Boneyard a few years back and had the BMW logos machined off. I got them done in yellow to match the Ohlins springs, but they looked like crap on the bike, the yellow wasn't working with the silver, so i never installed them. i finally decided that I wasn't going to go with a new front end to get the monoblocks so I sent them back to get done in blue. the Brembo logo is a hi-temp die cut sticker.

I am sure they will work much better once I hook them up, but i had to test fit them to see how they looked! I have the rear caliper as well. I like it!

Even if Brembo does powder coating that doesn't mean that there isn't a possible heat retention problem.

Never saw a caliper with powder coating on a race bike that was built by pro teams. So I never won't do that on a race bike or a street bike whose brakes are used intensively.

Certainly there isn't a problem if granddaddy and grandma go bike-traveling on an easy tour.

it seems obvious that any coating over a part that heats up will tend to hold in the heat, but i think the extent may be exaggerated. i have searched for some "real" research regarding the heat retention properties of powder coats, and I found nothing. it seems to be anectdotal or minimal at most. I found this blurb on a powder coaters website:

"Harley has been coating the cylinders with black wrinkle powder for years. Chrysler was doing the same with powder on the truck blocks also. We have done real world testing here. We coated Chevy blocks and also cast iron heads and accessories such as carburetors, water pumps and alternators. Infrared temps were taken before an after powder coating. The heat retention in the powder coated components was minimal less than 10 degrees difference between the coated and un coated parts. Once the powder coating is heat cured it will radiate or transmit heat at the same rate as other liquid paint coatings applied at the same mil thickness."

the powder coater I chose Andrews Powder Coating. Custom and Semi-Production Powder Coating. knows motorcycle parts, and the function of brake calipers, and they adjust their powder mix accordingly. as far as race teams go, because they are operating at the 99.99% level any performance gain or loss is real, so perhaps that is why they don't powder coat those parts, that plus the fact that you don't cover machined billet!

like i said it is pure aesthetics. the OEM brembos are actually a pretty respectable set of calipers, BMW just uglied them down to the point of invisibility. my little project just displays them better, and rids them of the cheap looking BMW logo. for such a brand centric company as BMW I am surprised they didn't let Brembo leave their logo on in the first place.
