Had enough of that before entering the racetrack for the 1st time. Never saw a sportster on a racetrack. Never had a harley sportster in front or longer than a few seconds behind in the mirror while riding the streets.

I will not dare to go against a 1200 Sportster with any of them from a standing start.
You know I got totally suckered by that back in 1998. I stopped by Bartel's here in LA to pick up some tee shirts for a shoot, but the guys persuaded me to test ride a 1200 Sportster. From their location in the Venice area there were no real roads, just traffic gridlock, but it was so much fun blatting from stop light to stop light, and it felt so baddass, that I whipped out my credit card and bought it on the spot! (It was only $5k back then).

Anyhow in the following five weeks the thing disintegrated under me while I discovered that when used as a I think a bike should be used, it didn't go, didn't stop, didn't handle, and didn't stay together! Without a doubt it the very worst motorcycle I have ever owned or ridden, but in that initial ten minutes of blasting from light to light it totally seduced me!

I traded in in for a Bumble-bee GS which I kept for six years, two in California, then shipped it back to London for four more years hard labor criss-srossing the UK before I finally sold it when I emigrated. Now that was a great bike!

Sad, very sad...the road not ridden is the next one for me.

Well I lost some friends in blind curves with tractors crossing from a field nearby or car drivers that went over the middle line. Perhaps I return to road riding when I'm older....... just for slow cruising. Maybe I go road riding this year as a kind of training program for the planned return to the racetrack in 2012.

I am always sorry to hear such stories, & many of us have a similar story we could tell. I guess it comes down to a personal perception of risk management. You seem to enjoy the track, where worries about two-way traffic and the like don't exist, and you concentrate instead on things like the limits of traction and acceleration. OTOH, I don't worry so much about how much brake chatter is too much, or getting to and then through a corner as fast as possible, because I may be riding a bit of road I've never seen before and may never see again, and so the limits of fast are unknown to me. Am I less likely suffer a crash and injury than you are (which is what we are really talking about)? I have no idea. Because I take to the open road I surmise my annual mileage exceeds yours & statistically speaking, I am more likely to have an accident than you. But then, statistics applies to everyone equally, but to no one in particular. Risk perception and risk management. Have fun, don't crash; me too, I hope!
