How big a hammer do I need to free this up ?

Hello all.

My rear brake is stuck. Peddle, and fluids are good. Pistons work fine. What is stuck is the alignment / guide / slide / carrier pin thing that allow for the caliper to "take up" wear on the pads. I think (?) this part should slide freely. The pins have a rubber boot over them.

Anyone else have this happen ... and figured out what to fix ?

From Machinery's Handbook:

-Hammer size should always be matched with a properly sized chisel or punch.

You need big'ish flat screwdriver, wiggle inn(between brake pads), then twist/ pray them apart, then pump the brakes back in few times. And do not forget to pump brakes before riding on!
Once you get them working Two hex nuts out- will come out if necessary to take out

i'm not really sure, especially since the white ones definitely taste white.

the book store where i got my special edition also had a lot of other great books, including "Why do some shoes squeak", so i'll betcha they've got a book that answers the centuries old "orange look/orange taste/orange crayon" mystery.

if you're interested, here's the bookstore:

Brakes are fixed and better then ever ! Crud build up between a bushing and pin is the culprit (this pin is sealed with a rubber boot; maybe moisture?) Anyway, based on the expertise of the BMW R1100S / R1200S Tech Forum, the calipers were pryed open with a prybar then closed with a hammer (a soft leather mallet was chosen). The pin not crudded up has a hex nut on it, so this was removed and the caliper came apart. (note: non of this required disturbing the brake line so no pumping and bleeding was required : ) After a thorough cleaning (knife scraping and rag wiping) final assembly was completed using an orange crayola crayon as lubricant. This should be good for another 75,000 miles !

apologies for hijacking this thread back onto topic, but here goes: there is some history of that pad pin getting rusty, and causing major grief. a sand down works well.
now, back to your regularly scheduled Crayola HiJack.
