What is a safe way to detect a defect Cat?

Hi guys,

what is a fool proof way to detect whether a cat converter is defective? I want to be sure before argumenting with my dealer.

what will happen, if it is not changed, appart from the noises? will it melt down eventually?

frostblue is making "rattling" sounds past 6000rpms, which is a new tone for my S. exhaust mufflers get louder and louder, which is OK according to the dealer and I do like the sound but this rattling, sounds more like future trouble.

I checked the board for prior postings on the subject and guess the cat converter is the culprit. I am aware that this is a problem on S produced back in 98/99, but haven't heard of the problem on 01 models.

Bye

P.S.: frostblue has covered 27000kms up to now

I'm told the problem is a spot welded baffle breaks loose inside and causes the rattle. With mine, I could (lightly, but firmly) kick the cat and it would rattle a bit.
What's your dealer say about it?
'luck.

Cool

Take the cat off the bike, drop it from a 5th story window, put it back on the bike, take the bike to the dealer and tell them something's wrong. I guarantee that you'll get a new one.

so,apart from the usual scams and lies, i now have to watch out for signs of "dropped from a fifth story window" syndrome too.

not the most creative i've heard, but close. like the way you think.
