Looking for HP2 used parts

I know there are quite a few more guys on here that are good at finding the used deals than I so I ask them this where are some good places to look to find used parts mainly HP2S stuff.

My LED taillight is done, not operable at all. And according to my dealer and another the light is No Longer Available. The thinking is that BMW is changing to the Tail light out of the 12GS (which has a partial red lens instead of the all clear original) and the ETK has not been updated. But my bike is in warranty and it may take them awhile to sort this out. So primarily I'm on the hunt for a tail light and not sure where to look. Bike has been down two weeks and its getting to be riding season in TX, I might go the GS light route just to get on the road but I'd prefer to have the HP2 clear.

Any insight is appreciated. Thanks, George

I find it hard to believe parts are becoming "unavailable" for a 2008 or newer motorcycle. Did you check the ETK?

Shreddr, thanks I will check those.

Sergio, Two problems actually. Some of the LEDs have broken off the circuit board (I rode it like this for at least a year) and the ones that haven't are now completely inop.

Cage, Yes you are absolutely correct this is QUITE ridiculous especially since the bike is still in warranty. I have two different dealerships trying to figure out what we are going to do. One thought is BMW is switching to the GS style and has not updated the US, but that hasn't been confirmed. Yes the ETK has been checked and double checked.

Dissect and repair. Leds could be changed out if nec. Having bought a new tail light for my R1200s I realize that it is not trivial to open the package, however it would be easy to change out the LEDS.

Can't help you in quest for used parts..

Any manfacturer selling vehicles in the U.S. is obligated by the Magnusson-Moss warranty act to repair or replace defective parts under warranty. They have a finite time to supply the parts or be faced with buying the vehicle back. That's what the legislation requires.

George, I'm game to help to try to rebuild your tail light. This link has a selection of replacement LEDs. Do any of them look like a they'd work?

Red | Component LEDs | Super Bright LEDs

Cage yes I understand buy back rules, but this bike will not be bought back from me, it will stay no matter the outcome. I appreciate your input on the rules here but I'm more looking for a solution so I can ride ASAP, not get rid of the bike. lol

Pauly, I'm going to the dealership tomorrow and depending on what they have to say I'd be interested in attempting a rebuild.

These look to be the ones on the circuit board:
Red 5050 SMD LED | Super Bright LEDs

I might try a GS tail light for the short future. Just want to ride my bike. haha

I know you don't want to lose the bike.
The point is BMWNA has an obligation to provide repair parts for current, under warranty vehicles.
At the least, I'd parlay this delay into a warranty extension.
BMWNA seems to have a habit of relying on customers doing....nothing... when they fail to perform as required.
At a minimum, your warranty should be extended, day for day, until they provide the part.
It's not about buybacks - it's about business, nothing personal.

George, I know that you have done some troubleshooting on this system. What is your exact diagnosis. Could the LED's be replaced? When i opened the taillight on my 11S, I discovered that the standard bulbs had been augmented with LED's. I believe Ken is addressing the homologation process. You must support what you sell for a determined period following its sale. Have you talked with BMW Customer Service. They worked well with me to resolve my cracked tank cover.

Cage, Yes the are required to fix it or buy it back and I'm definitely going to hold them to some account. But at the same time I need a plan B as I dont want to be waiting 2 months or however long it takes to get the part. I'm not concerned about warranty extension, but if it takes multiple months I will try to get them to pay my loan while the bike was down.

Bubba, Power to the light and a good ground is as far as I have gone. To do further investigation will mean to crack the seam on the light which will void the warranty.

I'm more interested in getting an original clear lens or fixing mine as I have a suspicion the new light will have the GS red lens.

Well since this has turned from a looking for used parts to saga of NLA parts here's where we stand now.

BMW will "goodwill" the tail light if it becomes available after im out of warranty since its a pre exsisting condition. hahaha duh, what a great outcome, lol. But that would leave me without a legal bike in factory condition. My service advisor at the dealer had me start a case with BMW and they said (baiscally) good luck and enjoy the wait until I mentioned I was a BMW employee and thought they should pay the loan note until it arrives. Now what we are going to do is make GS taillight work until the HP2 becomes available. So I now have one on order which will be here end of the week or beginning of next.

At the rate of the last couple months, that will easily be this year. Sadly though I was shooting to go out of warranty by mileage and not by time. I'm planning to dyno the bike at the 30k mark, unfortunately I dont have any other dyno numbers to compare to, but thought it would be fun to see where its at now. I will take it the track this fall and see what it does for 1/4 mile speed which I can compare to previous times.
