Keep riding, you'll see it -- not a gauge, but miles remaining. You had to have the very rare BMW computer option to get an actual gauge.

I think the book says the light and count down starts at 4 liters. I've run mine down to zero count and best I can tell I had about 9 miles to flame out based upon what it took to fill. Not something I recommend doing often.

the odometer, with mental adjustment of +- for frisky throttle always seems to work.

only problem with using the mileage system is when you miscalculate and flame out anyway, you can't yell at some incorrect little number on the dash, or rant at an overly-optimistic indicator needle.

my truck is a great example. the needle is humping the "F" when you fill it, but has never so much as spooned with the "E", but rather flames out (premature?) about a needle's worth before it gets there.
i use the odo in the truck too.

Mine works, it come on at between 40-50 miles to go, and counts down depending on how I ride. I set the Zumo gauge, which is linear, to go 145 miles, and show me fuel (and stations) the next 50 miles. It's a little red button with fuel pump design on the map, until I touch it, then I get a list of stations, distance, direction and prices.

The Zumo gauge works much better than the Mile to Empty reminder BMW provided. But better that we have no gauge when the fuel strip that fed the gage was historically so defective. Any Mile to Empty non-functional or improper reminder is likely due to that issue, the bad fuel strip one.
