Carbon Fiber Mirrors for my R1100S
I have been looking for real carbon fiber mirrors to fit my R1100S, without much success.
So, I decided to try to make my own. I bought the carbon fiber cloth and resin/hardener on ebay. I then sanded down the plastic mirrors and applied some black resin. When almost dry, but still tacky, I applied the carbon fiber cloth. Next came three coats of the clear resin, followed by two coats of automotive clear (shaker can). WOW! I like it. Now I got to pull off the other mirror... Thoughts? ![]() ![]() |

Are you kidding.........those are beautiful, especially when being done in such a straight forward manner. Figure out how to make these faster, stronger, etc and then get a CF stalk to match. The weight savings, especially if you use thin plastic mirrors (3//16") press cut to fit your stalk and bucket. Very nice, and I would love to buy some sets when you get them in "bolt on" order. I'm at work, but will try to remember to take a photo tonight. It came out better and deeper glossed looking than the photos show. I guess it was the flash.
I did this as I could not locate Carbon Fiber mirrors to fit this bike. As the original plastic is covered (not replaced) by a thin piece of the carbon fiber fabric, they have the stock shape and size, but look way cooler. Real carbon, not the "looks sort of like" carbon stuff. |

This is very cool, i'd thought of something like that for some time now (same for the overdash trim, btw).
It doesn't sound so easy to do properly, is it ? I see that the weaving pattern is quite irregular, do you know what happened that produced that result ? |
