| Registered R1200S rider. | R1200S - weak rear brake?
Hi all, I've been on a R1200S for almost a year now. I came from a R1100RS with linked ABS brakes so I'm not sure how strong the rear brake really was. If I remember correctly, when the ABS was switched off or failed I could lock up the rear with disturbing ease. (the unit might have failed twice during the 3 riding seasons I owned it. Turning the key off and starting the bike up again fixed the issue). Anyhow, the rear brake on my R1200S is incredibly week and I'm wondering if there is anything that I can do about it? Even if I stand up on the brake lever the braking force seems negligible. On hills it barely is strong enough to prevent the bike from rolling back... At low speeds the bike just seems to keep rolling and rolling... I try to use both brakes whenever possible in the hope that if I ever have an emergency I won't forget the rear... Has anyone tried to increase the braking force of the rear? And is it something that is recommended? I've heard that sport bikes have weak rear brakes for the safety of the rider... We're talking about an ABS sport bike here though... Curious to hear...

My HP2 simply will not stop using the rear brake unless I stand up on the pegs and have at least 900 to 1100 feet clear rolling distance if I intend to stop with just the rear brake at 30 mph. Rear brake only stopping from 60 mph would require a much longer straight however. They say on this forum that it can be fixed by adding a bushing between the lever pin and its containment bracket. Try and get the long thread that goes on about this.

Thank you for linking to that thread and bumping it up. I've read through the first few pages and will continue over the weekend. For some reason when I tried to use the Search function it searched all of the forums. I was already expecting a flame for not doing a search first. Thanks again!

If you do the rear brake mod that is in the posted thread your rear brake will properly. I noticed on mine when doing the mod once I lossened the pivot bolt for the rear brake just a little the brake worked better. Its just a poor design with an easy fix.

It takes the same amount of time to be nice as it does to be an arsehole on this forum. It's just a matter of choice. Glad to be of service.

Page 10 has the answers. Short answer is lube the rear brake lever pivot. I'll do that this weekend since my 05 R1200ST rear brake is weak. Rear Brake is CRAP PAGE 10

the Werner kit is the ticket to better rear brake performance on the R12S, I haven't seen Sofa around in a while though so it may be hard to obtain. I will also say that my HP2S rear brake works fine in the stock form.

That is so true... I do appreciate it! I'm glad that my brakes do work a bit. A student was sent home because he had zero brake on his bike. Took both Total Control classes last weekend and now I want my rear brake to work better. Instructor was impressed by the ABS on the R1200S. Let's you do stoppies without any issues. Guess they teach lifting the rear wheel up by a few inches for super emergency stopping. Don't really care for the sound the bike makes when it comes down again so I'll probably just practice it sparingly and hope that I'll never have to use it. The instructor thought the brake pads might be glazed... I'll see what the fix will be. Does anyone know where I could get the Werner brake kit? Only saw links to s-boxer.de and haven't found any obvious product links... Perhaps I don't have to go that route but with ABS on the bike, I'd like to get my money's worth and make sure that it's mechanically possible to lock up the rear.

If you find out how to get the Werner bushing fix, I'll take one too...

I am not sure there is more to the ABS on R12 than a button with attendant light on the dashboard. I have trouble triggering it even when I try to lock the rear intentionally...:-)

I'm also thinking of investing in a belly pan for additional ad-space. Perhaps a multi-order would make it more affordable.

If you do order some, please order two extra. Ben and I are looking for the kit as well. Spent zero time on the internet this week. Couldn't get off my bike... Really would like to get some rear brakes going... The front is pretty bad for off-roading...

Just to quickly note, Werner was (is?) making the kits at cost for the R12S community and they are not his "day job" - he's an engineer in the German auto industry.

No worries. Definitely always order a batch, both to make postage more reasonable, and to make it worth Werner's (and my own) time. working that with him now. r

I'm just back from a longer trip with my older motorbike. That's the reason for answering so late. I'm in contact with Roger in order to organize the order and the postage. @sdaddy: Good news to hear you will come again to Germany! Hopefully you and your wife will find again a possibility to visit me and my family! Werner
