Average MPG
Hey guys... quick question...
How many miles do you get out of a tank?.... Also, when does your low fuel light come on? Mine's coming on around 100 miles or so, and I need to refill around 130. Is this normal?... I've got a Staintune full system installed on my '01 with about 8k on it, but it shouldn't reduce the mileage THAT much, should it?... Ride on. B

You’re not alone!
My light usually comes on at 200-220 km and the most I have ever driven with one tank was 275 km. Tank holds 18 liters and I had 1 liter left on the 275km run. BMW claims 100km speed 4.6 l/100 and 120 5.6 l/100 Must be on a dyno or something as I don't even come close. Compaired to my old air heads, I'm could get 350 km out of one tank of fuel with them. Five extra liters fuel capacity on this puppy would help. Cheers Tomas

Hi, I get 42 mpg on average
Less at when accelerating/decelerating a lot, and more when there's a lot of steady state cruising, even at 8mph or better. The computer is really good a getting a lot of distance per drop of fuel in steady state. Otherwise, it's fairly poor. Of course, riding style and rider weight play a role too. A staintune by itself (no other physical or ride-style changes) should only help mileage, albeit, only a bit. Used to get the low fuel light at 100. Now more like 130. Mine got better with breakin. I have an induct, stock filter, laser-cat elim, and bbp chip on the middle (stage3) setting. later roger

Don't know what each person considers "a full tank", but if I fill the tank right up to the gas cap opening I get the following:
Fairly constant 70-80 mph: 48 mpg low fuel light on at: 160 miles (Confirmed on 1800 mile trip to Laguna Seca and back) Lots of acceleration, off/on, etc.: 40-42 mpg low fuel light on at: 125-130 miles Have full Laser, BB chip (on stage #3), SJ filter and snorkel. Generally run Chevron or Union premium. |

My low fuel light comes on at the 120 to 130 miles point on average. If I am really moving, the mileage drops considerably. I have not ever really calculated what kind of mileage I get out of the bike. I know that when I get to about 100 miles on the odo, it's time to keep the eyes peeled for a gas station.

Mid- to high-30's for me. If I'm really pushing (engine always between 4K and 7.5K), I can get the low-fuel at 110-miles, but typically is more like 125-130. (All US units.) My issue right now is light pinging now and then, even on 91+ premium. I think what everyone says about the engine mgmt. system leaning the system out under steady state is correct - mine pings mostly when I've been dogging it and then give it a good whack of throttle.

Like Roger, I get 40 - 42 mpg, and the light comes on at 140 miles. This is for doing anything below 90 mph, including hard acceleration. Steady 110 mph delivers closer to 32 mpg, with the light coming on at 110 miles. My bike is a stock '99 , except for an InDuct and K&N filter. It has 23,000 miles, and has always gotten the same mileage.

The light comes on at about 150 miles and I typically fill the tank at 160-170 miles. Never gone more than 185 before filling.
Mileage is typically about 42 mpg based on mostly cruising at 65-70 mph. CYoung |

I've been keeping a spread sheet of this type of thing. Rather than posting the whole spread sheet (which looks like crap, on the forum) I'll give you the highlights. Please note I've had my bike tuned and am running a BBpower chip (stage 3); so these results might not apply to all bikes.
Date of first record: Oct 27, 2000 Total fill-ups: 86 Average MPG: 39.4 Average tank range (before filling up): 139.4 miles Total distance travel: 11,991.2 miles (bike has 19,072 miles) Total amount of fuel consumed: 304.6 gal. Economy has improved as the mileage has increased.
The mpg comparison will vary as UK gallons are different to US ones so I just go on distance until the light appears: General pottering about (mixed town/highway) 120-125 Relaxed highway (75-85mph) 140 Riding like a twat on autobahns with luggage (120mph+) 90 if I'm lucky. I'm particularly impressed with the way the BMW luggage stays on at 140mph+!! I'm off to Europe* again next month so will check mileage again. Neil *I live in Airstrip One so it doesn't really count as Europe as a landmass.

2001 R1100S
14000 Miles Staintune, SJ Powerfilter, BBPower Chip, Lennies Induct, AMSOIL 20W50 full synthetic oil. If I keep it under 90 I can manage 170 miles before the light comes on, 200 miles before I fill up, thats right around 48 or 49 mpg. The BBPower chip made a 4 to 5 mpg difference. I was very happy. I installed the chip last of all my upgrades. If I ride like a idiot 100+, mpg drops to around 40. |

My warning light comes on consistently at about 250 Km, the other day I filled up at 305 Km and it took 18.29 Litres, I guess the extra cup full I squeeze in when filling up got me over the line.

mine spent most of its time round town doing wheelies and **** like that. got about 160 - 170 km before the light came on, usually 12 or 13km/l, which is 36 - 39 mpg or so i think.

What Fuel Crisis ? .
Yeah , scratchin, the light comes on at 180 Kms . Highway cruisin about 210 km . I did get 265 kms out of a tank a couple of times, light had been on for more than 30 kays . Heavily Policed days from memory .
Coincidently 265kms is all my old 90/6 is capable of these days since modifications and huge jets (thats down by about 100 kms) works out to 32 MPG .Not to mention jockey handicapping .Hence you do not hear me winging too much about fuel consumption on the 'S' . Mick . |

Folks - here's a UK comparison over the weekend with a filled to the rim tank.
London - Birmingham 120 miles @ 80/110MPH constant on motorway (freeway) + splitting lanes in various 3 - 4 mile log jams Fuel Light came on at 120 (funny that!). On the way home via twisties 50 - 120MPH Redlining gear changes 100 miles before fuel light. Running Castrol GPS Semi Synth oil Full Laser system incl. chip SJ filter and snorkel BT010 front / 020 rear 12,700 miles on bike rider = 203 pounds (93 KG) .............................. April 2002 London - Donnington Park race track with the Boxertrix boys (Richard and Shaugn) = 89 miles before fuel light. p.s. this was on stock S before above mods & at 10k miles ................................. |
