Wunderlich or Dobeck Fuel Controllers

Sorry, I also posted this in the "Parts and Bikes For Sale" section and can't figure out how to delete it, sooo ... The previous owner of my '99 did some kind of chip upgrade, and the fueling, especially at low throttle, is really atrocious (he was a former AMA flat track and road racer, and I think he set this bike up for top end), so I'm going to have to do something about that. I've checked out Power Commanders, but does anyone know anything about the Wunderlich ($299) or Dobeck ($225) controllers? They are considerably cheaper than Dynajet and they appear from the descriptions to be fairly easy to use, but I'm a bit leery just because of the price difference. Any knowledge out there?

Was his name John? Tacoma? If so you may need to run Nitromethane in it

Lots of controllers you can use....as well as some spoofers... if you are decent with electronics, there are plans to make a spoofer that plugs into the air temp sensor that will richen it up a bit at low rpm. Another trick is to bump up the voltage on the TPS. Make sure the brass air screws are not dirty.. if so it will stumble and lurch coming off idle.
If it is Johns bike, I would start by putting the stock air intake back on it.

I have had very good results with the "Techlusion" which is the same as the Dobeck (they make them for Wunderlich and Techlusion... or the other way around).

easy to install, simple to set up and very. very reliable...

Did JonyRR have a chip or PC III?

It is, indeed, John's bike from Tacoma, sold to me by Bob Birch, another AMA racer who owned it for a little over a year before his 75-yo knees and hip gave out on him. I haven't dug far enough into the guts to see what he had on it for an intake, although I can see a non-stock air screen of some kind under the oil-cooler air inlet. I'm not really that gifted electronically, so I'm going to be looking at plug-and-play solutions if I can (and if the wiring mods John did to it allow me -- he was definitely a do-it-yourselfer). It runs very rough at idle, but once it's warmed up, it goes OK -- just needs a little extra throttle on starting up from a light. If I can find the parts at a reasonable price, I'm going to try to get it back as close to stock as I can. Bob didn't have any of the original parts, so I'm starting from scratch here, but it looks like most things are available online. I'll have to see how it goes, a little at a time.

I haven't taken it apart enough yet to see if it's a chip or a PC III, although there is a Dynojet fuel/air gauge installed, so it could well be a PC III. If so, hopefully I can get it tuned a little more street-friendly. Thanks for the tips, guys. A good project for Sunday ...

Be sure to check for simple things first. I can't imagine Jony having a map in it that ran like crap at low RPM. I know periodically mine would do that and it was just the brass screws in the throttle bodies all cruded up. BTW I can give you Johns number if you want to talk to him... I am sure he would be glad to talk to you.... Since it was his bike he may know a simple fix. PM me if you want it.

Pretty sure this was the last phase of mods... PC3 with wide band O2

uberschnorkel part deux

I talked to him on the phone the other day. His spirits are incredibly high for a guy who's health has gone downhill, so fast. He has a rare muscle disease that is causing his body to not produce muscle cells.

I wouldn't mind getting John's number (I assume we're talking the same John Moffett in Tacoma). It looks like he has done MANY mods on this bike, and it would be a big help to talk to him about them. Send me a personal message if you don't want to make the number public. BTW, this is my first R-bike, so I'm kind of flying blind on a lot of things -- any assistance is much appreciated.

Thanks, Bill. As a follow-up on my earlier comments about the rough idle, I think it had just sat for quite a while without Bob riding it. I've put a couple hundred miles on it in the last week or so and it runs much better now than when I first got it. I think I'll still try to contact JonyRR about a list of mods, if he can remember all that he did -- there are wires and toggle switches everywhere on this bike, and it would be nice to know what all they're for! Bob Birch didn't have any of the gear that came with the PC III, so I've ordered what I need to do any re-programming that might be necessary in the future, but I think mostly it just needs to run a bit richer at idle and maybe at throttle-off (there's quite a bit of popping on deceleration in lower gears). Thanks, again. If you remember any more posts John might have done on his mods, I would appreciate seeing them. I have done a search on his posts, but haven't turned up anything new yet.
