Not just another great designer....simply the greatest bike designer since ..well...ever (and the "ta" in Bimota).

Top ten: Motorcycle designers - Massimo Tamburini - Page 11 - Motorcycle Top 10s - Visordown

And although some claim that the F4 (and Adrian Morton's "cut and paste" F3) is Maestro's highest moment ... my vote goes for the immortal 916/996/998 series.

RIP Maestro

Nah, I agree with the F4. The 916 was Il Meastro's greatest copy/paste hack, not his best original design.

If you mean by 'flop' the greatest technological and engineering marvel the motorcycle world has ever seen and probably ever will see in a 'production' bike, with the most beautiful design to ever come out of Japan, then yes. He blatantly copied that. And he did a piss poor job at it as well imo. I know he is your hero and all, but it would show some character to give credit where credit is due. Something the greatest ever was never man enough to admit to outright, and always beat around the bush when asked about the 916 design, saying designers always look at other good designs for inspiration and changing the subject.

The F4 on the other hand, that is a truly remarkable and timeless design. Contrary to the 916, it still doesn't look outdated and old, despite only being a few years younger than the 916. It is amazing how a bike designed in 1998 can still look good and modern 16 years later and still be sold with only minor design changes.

Hmm...

...that's like saying that the immortal 250 GTO (Bizzarrini/Scaglietti)is not the most beautiful car ever (bargain at 10++M as well) because it had "blatantly" copied the Alfa TZ2 (Chiti/Zagato). Note: designs spread widely the good old days, so don't take too literally the production dates.

Moral: the devil hides in the details.
