Carbon Fiber Rear Fender

Does anyone know of a source other than OEM for a carbon fiber rear fender in the US for a 01 R1100S?

probalby cuz when they fail and lock up the rear wheel on forward spin action you might get killed??
The failure mode if and when it happens is kinda unhappy.

So, acidburn, I take it you don't run a hugger? Doesn't the bottom of the bike - under the seat by the mufflers - get a little junky?

I don't have a hugger mounted yet, but I am looking into them. The standard one seems to be the Wunderlich model.

Anyone have a shock sock?

Wunderlich does seem to be the standard and their design has improved as to strength at the mount. Someone on the board also posted a number of pictures on how they reinforced the design, turned out really nice. Gotta be in cyberspace here somewhere.

As to the shock sock, Brad Z has one. I think its made by a company called Traxiom (sp?). Looks and works really well. I think he said they use them on mountain bikes.

Pyramid huggger, made in England. available from streetfighters http://www.streetfightersbydesign.com/streetweb/pyramid_page/bmw/R1100S.htm
CF was about $225, plastic (quite nice for the $) was around $160. much more secure mounting system than the Wunderlick. Which, like most things that wunderlick sells - they don't manufacture. they just rebadge the Ilmberger item, and add about 20% on to the price. they sux.

bingo is correct.
the shock sock comes from traxxion dynamics at www.traxxion.com.
jim at www.propilotracing.com also has a different "shockwear" version.

you can turn the whole thing inside out and not display the logo.

here's a shot from my brownie instamatic:

that pyramid definitely looks a lot stronger than the ilmberger/wunderlich. does it cover as much of the tire as the ilmberger?

no, the illburger covers more, both before and after it self-destructs.

What did you do? Chop one down? Which one? Got a pic? Why did you modify it - for looks or for function?

BTW, I understand that a lot of riders are not removing the small (standard) protector back behind the rear shock absorber and that interfers with adding a hugger (of any kind).

the standard protector will only work with the stock shock, or on an aftermarket unit that has been drilled & tapped to accept it's mounting bolts. most users indicate that a hugger WILL clear that protector, but with not much room to spare.

I am about to order one of these as well. Wally, since you already made contact with David, would you be interested in investigating the possibility of a group buy with him? Any other interest from the board in this endeavor?

I am the UK agent and distributor for Ilmberger Carbon Parts, HPE exhausts and SICOM silicon-composite brakes.

Let me add my comment to the above quote.

Obviously I cannot speak for Pyramid, NWS, or any other manufacturer of 'cantilever' style huggers, but as far as Ilmberger are concerned the standard shock protector should be removed before using the hugger. That even applies to the standard shock, let alone aftermarket ones with larger diameter springs.

The phrase "but with not much room to spare" I am afraid is not good enough. The relative position of the hugger and the shock spring (and swingarm) differs enormously between full compression and full extension, plus the hugger must be allowed to 'vibrate' naturally without any restriction.

Every single hugger that has been returned broken - and despite what has been written in this forum the actual number of broken huggers that are returned is very low - has shown evidence of regular contact with something at the front of the hugger.

In any event, why on earth would you want to fit a shock protector AND a hugger.

I ride a BCR and that is a picture of the front of the bellypan after 3954 miles. The picture is to give you an idea of the sort of conditions that the bike has been ridden in. It is of course fitted with an Ilmberger hugger and the shock is unmarked and stays clean. But of course it is not only the shock that stays clean and free from debris - it is pretty much all of the underside. There is just a small amount of chipping on the swingarm below the shock, that has now been halted by a small square of 'helicopter' tape. There is absolutely no need for any other kind of protection for the shock.

I do not know who handles Ilmberger products in th USA, but ask them!! If there isn't anybody, or they do not want to answer you, then ask me and in that case maybe I will supply you in the USA as well.

Disappeared Huggers>?

Greetings,

"Every single hugger that has been returned broken - and despite what has been written in this forum the actual number of broken huggers that are returned is very low - has shown evidence of regular contact with something at the front of the hugger."

What about the Ill-Burger huggers that fell off? You can't study them.

It is still an ILL-Berger:

"Every single hugger that has been returned broken"

Sounds like the same >"it is the owners fault" diatribe that we heard from Mitch Herman>the present?past Ill-Berger rep.

Again, if it is YOU that is hurt by this product<>the failure rate is 100%. I have seen many failed units without any indication of "rub".

Safety is your best friend!

I'd be interested in getting one in carbon fiber (to tie-in with the front). Anybody know how this works with the 5.5" wheel? I'm thinking of getting one later on.

and if you really want the good tie-in, get in on the Pack-Parts group buy we're working. Jens sells an all CF front fender ("wing", as he calls it) that should cost under $200 by the time all is said & done with 10% item discount, group shipping, etc. The Pelican GB is open until sometime later this month. here's the thread's link:
