How Fast Have you Gone...?

OK how fast have you gone on your R100? Not looking for any bragging just real curious about real experiences. I have only been 115 and I am more afraid of going to jail than anything else. I thought I might get a few guys to help me by being scouts ahead and behind. I’d like to peg it in 6th and see what it’s like.
I’d be interested in doing it soon as I plan on putting a set of Lenny’s sprockets in this fall and it would be interesting to do a before and after to see what top end is gone. My Bike is daily rider although most is a slab ride on the express way, but a fair amount of in the city and in South Carolina the mountains are just ½ hour ride away.
I’m sure you track day guys have been at full tilt, I’d like to experience that.

An R1100S is supposed to go 140 mph. German certifiable, whatever that meant.

I used to test all my vehicles.

But, if you don't have the wide open spaces, I wouldn't do it. What you could get away with 15 years ago, with maybe even a smile from the cop, these day's it's the slammer and a $10,000 fine. Plus bike confiscation, a billy stick on the side of the head and a beating in the ditch...

The problem you'll run into is that the R1100S speedometer is notoriously inaccurate - usually on the optimistic side, by 6-10 mph...
So get a GPS and then take a picture when done...

You can find lots of top speed threads here.

It also takes a lot of room to get up to speed. A mile... maybe two. The bike's a freight train, not a drag racer...

6 - 10 Mph error no big deal to me I figure close to 140 is good enough. We have a looong stretch to do it on, but as you pointed out the down side is getting caught. be nice to do a Go-Pro ride... just a one time event for me... and not tell the wife of course :-)

Might be a one time event if you try it on a public road since there's a very good chance you'll end up a grease spot on the road.

Take it to a track day if you need to go fast. Assuming you have the proper gear if you even consider going that fast.

I've seen 140 (speedo) a dozen or so times, but it kind of hurts knowing that the bike is at its limits.......

at the track I can only get to about 130 coming over turn 1 at Laguna. Its tough holding the throttle wide open coming over the blind crest and knowing you have the turn 2 hairpin coming up!

but yeah, I think 140 on our clocks would be about 130 on GPS.

On my R1100 200 KM/h on my R1200 220Km/h and on my S1000RR 260Km/h. R1200 had lots more to give, so did the S1000RR. All this at sea level. I feel the S1000RR can reach 320Km/h easy.

Have family (relatives) which are LEO's (one's highway patrol - the other LACSD) but didn't ask for them to LIDAR me on my R1100S. Bounced off of the rev limiter twice since I've owned it and its just not where it likes being, actually, its as if it's being punished - I don't think it liked it much either. Don't know what rev limiter inhibited top speed is with a 180/55/17.

My 1098S however, showed 181 while LIDAR confirmed it optimistic by 8 so, only 173on that one. Interestingly, my Aprilia with a whole lot fewer stallions pulled to 171. Considering drag increases exponentially with speed I suppose its all good.

Red line in 5th with a 180/55 on, on the back straight at Pocono, running the FUSA course configuration. Plenty fast enough for me, and never on the street at that speed.

I have seen 140 on the CBR600 track bike, on the track of course.

On the street, I rarely see 100, just no need for speed on the street anymore, the track takes care of that itch.

Why terminology is important. And you're now getting the undocumented bragging too. No extra charge!

I remember seeing 130 once just as it left the ground for a very brief moment over a small rise in the road. What I don't remember is if that was after I corrected the speedo.

225 kp/h easy. Pulled like a SOB from 180 in sixth. Rock steady and undramatic.

Yeah, I assumed the OP meant R1100S........ I doubt the R100 would get much in the way of heart-pumping speed.

A well tuned R11S that was burnished in properly when first put in service, will run an honest 142 to 146 depending on conditions. Dead level ground, no headwind, perfect tune...........142-46 will be there, and only takes about a mile from a standing start. In 1977 BMW produced the fastest airhead ever which was the 1977R100S and it was the first stock BMW ever to run the 1/4 mile in less than 13sec and had a top speed of 132 with driver in a full, behind the fairing, tuck. The fastest top end motorcycle i have ever been on was a built up RSV Mille and it would see 174-176..........but also.......the 2005 K1200S with the then new Duro Lever front end..........would also run right on up toward 170 range. All of them have been fun. For sheer "speed' in its day (early eighties), my choice would be the Leverda Mirage 1200 cc triple which was simply the fastest thing on any American road in 1982 and barely strained to reach above 140. I also had a 1982 Suzuki (the only Japanese bike I have ever owned) and it would run right at 141 top...........but my Leverda with it larger displacement and factory 7C cams would simple slip away from it. In the way back late seventies, speed was different and the first really fast (at that time only) bike that caught my attention for it's ability to simply just keep pulling up top was the 1977 MV Agusta 750 America that I bought "as-new" in 1978. It only had 750 cc but would, after at first being left behind..........catch up, and pass the big UJM bikes of the time. Nothing would keep up with a 750 America S top end until the eighties brought on more great engines from around the world.

I still love speed and have run the HP2 to an indicated 167 but am now interested in putting a taller ratio rear drive that I got from BMW on it and see what she will do then. Be safe out there and enjoy every minute of every day. One More Day In The Garden Of Life.

In 2004 I was on my way home to Fremont, Ca from Ojai, Ca. Out there the only thing for miles was straight roads. I topped out my unfaired R100/7, Speedo was maxed, no more rpms were being pulled and i couldn't have gotten lower in the bike if I tried. It was probly only 110 if that and was the scariest and dumbest thing I've done being on a bike that fast with tired suspension. Now fast forward and my HP2 has been an indicated 169 with still room left and that was nothing after that ride on the R100, haha.

I needed a draft from Gus but I've had mine show 160 on the clock with the counter showing 8500 so 146 sounds about right ish!!,I too have another bevel drive with different gearing that I must fit at some time.
