HES Info, parts and wiring
There's been a few posts lately about the HES wiring and/or the sensor itself and whether to replace or repair. Dana Hager's article on this seems to be the best source for repair and he mentions a few things in there that help but there's two problems (not with the article but with the parts), one is the sensor and the other is the recommended wiring. The original sensors, Honeywell 2AV54, are no longer available and the suggested wire type, Belden 83396, is expensive and only available in spools unless you can find somewhere to purchase by the foot. I tried that and found 50ft minimum purchase required at about $6/foot. Not a good deal.
So, for those who might plan ahead and do this type of work on your stuff I found replacement sensors from a company in Germany who makes these specifically for automotive type usage and match the operating specs of the Honeywell unit. I have 10 right now and they appear to be very well made. I also found a surplus spool of the Belden 83396 High Temp control wire that Hager mentions, 4 FEP insulated conductors, one stranded ground/drain wire and silicone jacketed. The jacket is red. I don't sell parts for a living and I'm not looking to start now so aside from a few bucks to cover costs I doubt you can find or import this stuff for less than I'm willing to let it go for. If there's interest, use a PM. It takes about 2 weeks to get more sensors. Repost this anywhere you might see some benefit. I offered to do Brad's plate but I haven't heard back from him. Maybe his bike is already running like it should. I was considering $25-30/each for sensors (cheaper if I buy more bulk), $2 foot for the Belden cable (you need 2ft, 21 inches actually), I may have a part number for the 4 or 5 round terminal connectors and the riveting tool is easy to make. Plus the actual shipping cost. I seem to keep bikes forever so my 2 1100s with have backup parts standing by. tony

Are these 1100 parts or fit 1200 too?

Nope. The R12 and HP engines use a cam sensor/ECU combo to switch the primary.

had to take a break for some doctoring (me not the bcr) and follow up on that project that your bride Cindy suggested when we last met. if the offer still stands, i'd love to get help sorting this mofo out. tired of riding a vibrator. (yea, i know, that's what i said). i should be mobile & manly again in a few weeks. (not dead yet). in the meantime: doc says to me: "I don't want you lifting anything over 15 pounds for the next 4 weeks." i say, "So i have to pee sitting down?" nary a chuckle can i get out of this guy. just a blank stare followed by "...well, anyway..."

I've been told i'm an awesome watcher, so we'll make a solid team of standing-arounds.

Steve Bruhn was a good friend/biz partner who passed away a couple of years ago.
he made a living shooting photos and writing articles about the mx and sx races. He went by the name "TFS" which stood for The Factory Spectator. His reasoning: The factories raced. Steve Spectated. so TFS was born. i still see his stickers on bikes as far away as europe and australia. So is anybody in for Tony's HES cure? The solution has been well documented. Trust me, you don't want to be playing bucking bronco if your HES decides to start hiccupping. taint' entertainin' at'll

Sheesh, you can't really tell where these threads are gonna travel, can you.
I don't want to steal the credit for cure. After all the HES banter I got a bit paranoid, that combined with the obsession to take everything apart that I get my hands on (well, almost everything as some things are better left intact) led me to find the stuff for what appears to be the inevitable HES problem. Throw in the need to have backups for the backups and you end up with a spool of expensive cabling and a bag of Hall sensors. What's the adage: why buy one when you can have two at twice the price? Brad, I'm up for suggestions to get the job done. My weekdays are tied up at school right now. You can send the unit to me but what I'd really like is to do is get a waveform of the four coils and both HES'es to see exactly what's happening when these things go bad.

Tony, did you ever come up with a price?
A complete new one is around $225 BOSCH - BMW R Oilhead Ignition Hall Effect Trigger Sensor Thanks go to PP member TJS for the link…. Mine has started bucking when wet, but since I have other bikes to ride I haven't been in a hurry to fix it.

Bill, right now I have 10 sensors and the wire. I would like to get $25 each for the sensors and $2/ft for the cable and it costs $5.25 or less to ship two sensors and the cable. Like I said, my original goal was to have backup for mine and Cyndy's bikes but assuming we may use two for Brad's bike then there are 8 left. I don't really need the parts for our bikes just yet and I can always order more.
I found a place that sells sensors from the same company in Germany and they sell them for almost $50 each ( BBHME56: Hall Effect Vane Sensor Replacement for 2AV54, 2AV16A, 2AV51A, 2AV56 and 2AV63 ). The German (Hong Kong actually) company makes two sensors to replace the Honeywell unit. One has better resistance to magnetic interference and cost more than the unit this other place sells. I ordered the better sensors for a few dollars more each. They appear to be well made and I wouldn't expect any problems but just in case someone thinks they don't work correctly I'll buy 'em back and use them to make Hall effect ignition simulators for school.

tony~
the surgeon said i absolutely positively cannot ride for a minimum of a month. what i heard was "give it a couple of weeks at best, and you'll be good to go." that's put us at november 1 weekend. i can shoot fotos of the process that you can share with others. the bike is still the way you saw it a couple of weeks ago, with all the tupperware removed. you can sniff my bike's butt, run your EKG and if you buy lunch, i'll even show you my newest scar.

hard to say at this point, since using stomach muscles causes me to scream like a little girl.
i do have some awesome pain pills, but i've noticed that when i try to pick my nose, i poke myself in the eye. neither situ is conductive to doing anything that requires doing it the right way. maybe i can lure sergio down here, he wrenches, i snap fotos, we buy each other lunch. "hey there young man, i have some south american candy here for you...."

Got the cable Tony. Thanks ! Did you cut the white lead out as the sensors only use three ?
