Ride with son on last day of year........

I had a great day yesterday, as this year closed and the curtain starts to open for a new one. I took a 140 mile ride with my youngest son, Waylen, on the last day of the year. He is 26 and I am.........well, way on up there. Still, seeing him sitting so straight up and tall on a 1970 classic R60/5, while I followed intently on a 11S, made my heart linger in goodness for the whole ride. My first trip to Alaska in the Spring of 72 was on a 1970 /5 and formed my love for the open road. Seeing him astride took me so back into my own youth and re-affirmed why having a son or two can be so wonderful.

Here is wishing all the Pelican brothers, lurkers or full time, a fresh new start for the 2015 and may we all do our part to make this earth a better one. Lets all ride more, consume less, detour fracking, and hope for a government that will work together for the future of this Garden of Eden that we get to visit for such a little while.

Lets all us old riders vow to not quit our passion, but rather get in even better shape for the continued roads ahead. Love and Respect to all of the Pelican Brothers who help make this such a fine forum. Jim "Dr. Curve" Roche

Great sentiment and comments, Jim

Riding with your son and him riding a bike that brings back fond memories of your first trip to Alaska...... Very cool! Doesn't get much better than that......

Great pic Bill...

How's the old girl holding up to Bill 2.0 skills? Remember she was ridden by an old man for 8 years prior with mediocre skills. That goes for mechanical skills too. Made any big changes yet?

Holding up well. Bill 2.0 really likes it. He really impressed me in the North Arkansas tight technical roads. Only changes made were those we did when we got it…Swapped it back to the stock gear ratio, and a few other things listed in this thread. Oh.. and Sergio Provided some HID's for it just in time for young Bill's 22nd Birthday.
Lets go for a Ride!

Riding with you family is a great joy in life. Happens less now as the boys have their own lives and careers, but still planning on doing it again sometime.

Fun even when getting photobombed by some bald guy in Slovenia.

I am touched that other Dads out there are as nostalgic as I am. I miss my boys everyday.........but had enough sense to make sure they had the "wings" necessary to fly away with out falling. I hope someday to go across the country with Waylen but for now, just riding locally will have to do. For us its South Georgia, and North Georgia.........and for now.........no where else. Wonderful new year to all I hope..........

Fantastic thread. Riding cross country with my father is something I love. Maybe when my kids are old enough I'll experience it from the other side. Happy New Year.

Way back when...........

The season, and then start of the new year, often force the memory to clip back in time. Time which has gone so fast, and sometimes, gently. Even now however, us old bikers need to rekindle our youth, go out for a nice slow ride, and simply remember the days of "No Hay Bales, No Guard Rails, No Snivelers Allowed." My boys see these old photos and just shake their heads.............however did we make it thru those times. Flex'ey forks, narrow tires, barely brakes, candle lights..................Oh, those were the days!

Being the riding son in the dad/son combo, I can appreciate the sentiments from the other side. Unfortunately, my dad has decided he will not ride a bike anymore at 71. Still, we got do ride 10's of thousands of miles together to all kinds of places. Good memories. Just sad that we won't be creating any new ones anymore. Not on the bikes at least.

Dad taught me how to ride, starting at 13 in mall lots (he is gone now). How I wish I had a son, but I have two daughters that do not ride.

Oh well, my R1200S has one seat and no rear foot pegs. My wife wishes me well each time I ride, but she never liked it (in the early years).

I was wondering what age I should stop riding. Thanks to your father, I don't need to worry at least next 19 years.

I will be 72 this coming March and still ride the wheels off of my 3 current bikes

Don't have any plans to give it up and this summer plan to ride one of them out to San Jose BMW and ride the great roads of Northern California on a new R1200RS.

Jim, and you others, you have no idea how much I envy your riding with your Sons, good for you guys and cherish every minute.

Thank you Richard, and I hope you realize how much I still wish I had the bike to my right in the picture, just as much as I wish I still was in the condition I am in the photo. I bought it, and then sold it, not ever realizing how much they were actually worth. Can you tell from the picture what bike and model it is? Just curious if the pelican brothers here might remember those small Red bullets made in 1977.

From the engine castings it is Italian, MV would be my guess
