BMW Roundel New Battery for HP2 and R11S ordered (very light in weight)

Hello brothers, just wanted to mention that I am going to try some new battery types in the bikes here. They are so light I can not believe it. What are the thoughts out there on these new powerful light weights??

For the R11S the Standard Recommendation is their LFX18L1-BS12 MSRP: $186.95 The LFX Standard recommendation is the best overall pick for most applications, and has been selected to give strong cranking performance and long life-span.

This LFX battery is 8.30 Lbs. lighter than the lead-acid 51913.

Specifications:
Voltage (V):12
A/Hr PbEq:18
Cranking CCA (A):270
Weight (grams):960.00
Weight (lbs.):2.12
Max Charge (A):18

and for the HP2:

For the HP2 the Standard Recommendation is their LFX14A1-BS12 MSRP: $153.95
This LFX battery is 7.33 Lbs. lighter than the lead-acid YTX14-BS.
Quantity:
Specifications:
Voltage (V):12
A/Hr PbEq:14
Cranking CCA (A):210
Weight (grams):830.00 Weight (lbs.) 1.83
Max Charge (A):14

Seems like a good way to cut weight on a already light bike. A battery that weights under 2 pounds for a HP is "way ok" in my book. The battery maker is Shorai and the case is made of carbon fiber. Japanese.

Nice... I'll have to bookmark this for when my battery dies in 22 months.

8 pounds is a significant weight savings in a critical (high) location, i assume it needs a special charger? i just bought a new odyssey so it should be a few years before i jump at it.

Strangely I got a phone middle of last year about lithium batteries, being the great non believer said yea yea yea and took no notice, but having since made some inquires looks like their coming up on the out rails at a pace!!

Shorai Batteries - I-BMW.com

For what it's worth,Odyssey don't make batteries for motorcycles, their made for other applications,it just so happens there are an odd few that fit bikes.

signit98 said the following when I posted a topic about these batteries in December.

Quote:
They have a tendency to overheat as well...

One of the MAJOR downsides is that they don't drain like normal batteries. They go until the charge runs out and then they are OFF... no slow down cycling of power, no warning... OK, I am done... poof!

I don't think that's a battery I would use if the bikes was predominantly used as a commuter or otherwise in short distances.

While 8 pounds is significant, in terms of weight savings, I don't see the application on a daily basis... There are other ways to save that weight... I for one, can stand to loose 8 pounds... or carry that much crap around in the tank bag, etc.

Maybe on the Desmosedici... on the GS?... not so much!
Put me off at the time...and I am still not convinced.

I love the idea, and will probably end up with one, eventually.
Saw two trackside failures in Li-whatever batts (not sure of exact brand/flavor) last year that put me off a bit. Literally meltdowns. No big deal on an old sv or gixxer, but can't picture in even my aging duc or S, much less a nice HP2 etc. It's not common, but enough that I'm not _yet_ interested. And though the weight is pretty high, it's otherwise well centered, so it's a good benefit, not a great one. For a racebike that only had room for a bike back in the tail, I'd probably do it now.

When all is right, they're definitely awesome. Stupid-light. Note, the current is good, but the capacity mediocre, so, if you have a bike that's hard to start (takes several goes, or gets started in the cold and ran for very short trips) it's not ideal either.

Still, they're cool. The first time you hold one, you really struggle to believe it could start your bike.

If you're not too risk adverse, go for it. I think they fall into functional-bling (not visible, and not needed, but with some actual benefit and cool-factor)

If we get a small e-start motard built this year, IT will have one for sure. Or maybe in our Moriwaki. Still planning.

Have fun with them guys, and keep us informed.

Strangely enough phoned the guy today who mentioned it 6 months ago,he's close friends of the main mover and shaker here in the UK for them, tells me the same as the above,he races a 610 Husky,no kick start just electric,I ask him if uses one,not likely he said,if it doesn't go after the second attempt with one of these lithiums ,but they'll only get better.

Check out this version of lithium ferrous batteries. The drag racers are starting to use these as they save so much weight. These batteries will fire up large displacement bikes without a problem. If used in the cold it must be turned on to heat up then will fire the bike. Haven't heard of any fires or explosions from them.

I have not bought one yet, however, I did see them at the dealership. I was surprised at how light they were. They seemed like they were prop batteries, not real batteries. They were priced a bit less than the BMW battery and a bit more than the Odyessey. They seemed very trick. I'm not worried about weight on my bike, if I were, I'd just loose weight. But, I'll definitely give these a good look when I'm in the market for a new battery.

Late to the party here, but for those of us with Non-ABS '99s would the LFX14L1-BS12 be adequate rather than the LFX18L1-BS12?

best,

Dave

If maintained it shoud be about 7 or 8 years before you will need to change it out.
