Well nuts in rear subframe of R12S
I have found the well nuts of the rear subframe of my R12S spin in place and I can not tighten the
pannier mounts? I haven't dealt with these before, options? Thanks

As I see it the only possibility, if there's space opposite side of the hole, os to drill straight through the subframe and tighten up not to hard with a nylon nut from.the outside....

Or of you can't get the screw out to drill onto the internal nut from the outside with a thin drill, then trying to hold it still with the drill while unscrewing the screw... In theory....

I can't get the screws in to tighter without the well nut turning. Once in I don't plan on removing. I really don't see a way to hold it without drilling of the subframe which I don't want to do.
I guess the upper mount under the seat could be mounted by drilling out and through and replacing with bolt. The lower mount is covered by the upper frame so that option is out.

Can you get them out? If so… get some longer bolts and a nut and washers… put the nut on the bolt with a washer…. then run the bolt in…. then tighten the nut down really tight while holding the head of the bolt from turning. This will crimp the rivnuts tighter in the frame so they don't turn. loosen and remove then use the bolt to tighten up the others, then you should be able to use the factory bolts as intended.

Think I'm following you Bill. Sounds like it may work if I can get enough threads of the bolt into the rivnut. It starts turning as soon as I start threading.

should be enough visible on the outer edge to hold it with some needle nose to an awl to thread the bolt in by hand.. unless the threads are bad… then perhaps a tap to clean up the threads may be a good option to try.

Seems previous owner didn't have the mount very tight as there are no shoulders left on the rivnut to hold. I think I may need to install new rivnuts. Is removal a chore?

I have had some success with loose rivenuts by cleaning the shoulder area with brake cleaner or alcohol and applying JB weld around the perimeter. Let that set over night and then carefully tap the threads to clean up. Worth a shot before you go to more drastic measures

Removal will be time consuming with a die grinder and a burr.

I've had success spraying Locktite primer around the nutcert & allowing to dry, then carefully applying RED locktite (super strength) around the edge (rotating the nutcert might help wicking) and eventually wiping the excess off and leave overnight to fully cure. Sufficent locktite wicks around the nutcert to hold it suprising well. The one I did had a shoulder though. After that experience i would try this option every time first. Important not to overtighten nutcerts. Good luck!

Thanks to all for the advice. I ended up removing all 6 riv nuts by grinding
them out internally. Thanks Bill. Replaced with new nuts. ![]()
