Could there be fault codes present with no engine light on?

As the title asks, could there be new fault codes present even if the engine light isn't on?

Yes. Not every error is critical enough to raise an alarm on display. And The error may not be present at the time, but it can still be logged.

Thanks TM. I think I'm going to order a GS-911 then.

Not sure about all the features versus GS-911, but check Carly BMW Bike out.

Intersting find, but doesn't look like it works on our old R11S...only newer bikes.

Looks interesting. Except they don't say dog ***** about what functions it supports. Yeah, read and clear fault codes. But GS911 can do so much more and by now can do most things the BMW dealer computer can do, including calibrations. And my 8 year old first generation device is still supported and getting all the new functionality.

I would love to be able to use my phone or tablet instead of hooking up my laptop to the bike, but unless it can do the same things GS911 can do it is not a serious alternative (in my opinion).

Then again, I actually use the functionality GS911 offers and my bike never sees a dealer. Perhaps others don't need a whole lot more than reading and clearing fault codes.

TM, do you ever see a need to keep the GS-911 plugged in for an extended period of time to monitor the bike? I know you have older version which doesn't work with a smartphone, but curious on your thoughts since looks like it can be left attached while riding so wondering how useful that is.

maverickma... If you'd like to take a peak at the code(s) before buying a GS-911, I'll offer to the services of mine. You'll have to come over to Dirty Jersey though, I'm just over the river and through the woods. If interested send me a PM and we can discuss offline.

Wow thanks Oddalloy for a such a kind offer. I just ordered the GS-911...figured it was best to have one on hand. I'm actually from NJ, only lived in PA for the past 8 years!

If you ever feel like riding some different mountain and farm roads and you have time to make it out to the Lehigh Valley in PA (I'm 20 minutes west of Bethlehem in a town called Fogelsville) look me up. I ride twisty mountain roads, but I'm very cautious. I also have lots of vacation time to burn so I can be free during the week. The roads are just as good as 519, 651, and the hawks nest, I promise!! Doug

Found another site that offers diagnostic software, not for the 1100, but they show they support the newer bikes, 1150 and up.
Anybody familiar with this company?

Looks like there's a lot of CANbus tools being produced, which makes sense. The CANbus is relatively easy to snoop compared to the old proprietary interfacing.

So much for automotive electronic security.

Driverless cars are starting to look less and less attractive...if you were in the back seat having a cocktail and got pulled over who would go to jail, Google or you??

That's a fair question. Will we be able to pick a 'persona' as a driver, you know, Race Car Driver, Little Old Lady or Grandpa (mine had a real heavy foot) or someone else when enabling the Auto Drive?
