What you don't hear is that the steam engine generates maybe one tenth the noise of a diesel engine of equal horsepower rating. Steam - the foundation of modern civilization. Until gas turbine engines came along all - ALL - the heavy work was done by steam.
Diesel is a great intermediary and it IS simpler to build (you should see the Codes that apply to pressure boilers), but nothing generates torque like steam. BTW - Otto Diesel originally designed his engine to run on coal dust, which both steam and gas turbines can also digest.
