I have a 2000 X5 and could not locate the crankshaft position sensor. This vehicle has the 4.4 V-8. I looked diligently on the front of the engine. Finally located it. It is underneath at the rear of the engine. I just got done replacing it and had to remove the skid plate for access. I hope this helps.
