I drive my 986 all year here in New England (with the hardtop on) and I use Continental Extreme Contacts on stock 16" wheels in the winter time. They work fine for all of the conditions that I've encountered. It's no use taking a Boxster or Cayman out in anything more than a couple of inches of snow since the ground clearance is only about 4 inches.

I would strongly recommend though that if you're going to take your Boxster or Cayman out in the winter time that you liberally coat the bottom of the car with Tectyl or a similar sealent -- especially the aluminum suspension pieces, struts and springs. The chassis/tub of the car is galvanized by Porsche and will be fine unless you've had an accident or massively scraped the bottom. But the aluminum suspension pieces will sacrificially oxidize which will result in aluminum oxide in all of the bolt holes. At that point it's virtually impossible to get the bolts or studs out.
