CEL on my "new" 98!`
I Just picked up my "new" 98 boxster on Saturday! On Sunday, during a drive out on Long Island (New York that is!) my Check Engine light came on. Being a part time Autozone Employee, and adept with an OBD II I pulled into the shop, and pulled the code. "Low Cat Efficiency Bank " Usually this means a bad O2 (I think) How tough are they to replae, and is there anything I need to look out for?

That is not a bad O2 sensor. If an O2 sensor is faulty, it will return a O2 sensor error (B1S1. B1S2, B2S1. B2S2)
Drive the car for a bit - really run it and get it hot. You may just have a contaminated catalyst. AFJuvat

This is really an uneducated comment, but maybe the gas you bought is not what it wants. I have had lights go on since the advent of OBDI and II that go out and stay out on another tank of different gas.

I took the Box back to the used car dealer I bought if from, and after 2 days, I got it back with no light! They claim to have changed the o2 sensors. It remains to be seen if the light stays off though. Also, I contacted a Porsche dealer in my area, and gave them the VIN. 2 hours later, I got a call back and was happily informed that if they can confirm that the CEL (low cat efficiencey bank 1) is indeed a result of a failing cat, they will replace it under Warranty!!!!
I've got 70800 miles on my 98. I does help that they are a Porsche, Volkswagon Subaru dealer, (what a combination!) and I'm a Subaru Parts Manager! ![]()
