check engine light

The check engine light came on shortly after a fuel refill. Is there anywhere I can have it checked without having to drive to the dealer in Portland 70 miles away? Like an auto parts store? Or is this strictly a Porsche opportunity for me again?

thanks

chris

Make sure your gas cap is on tight.

Click it three times. Check your back trunk - look for Porsche emissions service campaign A290 sticker. If you do not have this sticker, take it to a dealer, they will update your gas cap.

If you cap was just loose, it should clear itself within a week or so.

obd

I went to Autozone and they plugged in the computer and this is the code I got:

P0446

A malfunction exists in the electrical circuit for the vent control in the evaporative emission control system

So what do I do? This did come on within 20 miles of filling the tank

thanks

Double check your cap - make sure the sealing O-ring didn't roll on you or get broken

cap looks ok and I tightened it 3 clicks when I put it back. The sticker is in the rear trunk so the cap was replaced last year. I'll drive it a few times and see if the light goes off. Or do I need to line the pockets of the dealer again?

thanks

I'd be willing to bet AFJuvat is correct. Tighten your gas cap (always 3 click min.) and give a few days of driving and I bet the light goes out. So long as the light is not flashing, your fine for now. So, to answer your question, in short, no a trip to the dealership does not seem to be needed at this point. Check back if it's not off after a week or so. You can relax. BTW, did anyone scold you yet for taking your car to Autozone?!

I haven't been scolded yet. But the kids skateboarding in the Autozone parking lot thought it was cool when I drove in.

If it is, in fact, your purge valve, they do sometimes stick. If it doesn't go out in a couple of weeks, have the light turned off. (anyone with a decent OBD-2 reader can turn it off)
