this the same as the records reported to carfax? I bought my porsche w/ no records but carfax had listed all things that were done to the car in the years since built. So is it safe to say carfax records are equivalent to dealer records?

All the Carfax records I've seen don't mention service history. Usually only licensing (tabs), emission, change of owner or address are there.
Look at the owners book, sometimes there is business card from the supplying dealer or similar and you can research from there.
You probably bought the Porsche from a used car dealer.........who bought it from an auction, which is why there were but aren't any records. Been through this lots of times.

Personally, I'd never spend over $10k for any car if it didn't have service records and history.

Britwrench is right. to add, Carfax also can't tell whether a car was wrecked, repaired and never claimed on insurance. in this case, just because it came up clear obviously doesn't mean that it is. Carfax is good, but it can't tell everything
