Lloking at a 2001 Boxster
I do not know much about these cars. I have heard and read about the rear main seal being a problem. Was this also a problem with the 2001 cars?

All years of Boxsters seem to have rear main seal problems. Porsche is updating the seal and I have heard of using the stronger metal one from the Cayenne but some of these can still leak if the case is too eccentric. The tool the dealer uses to determine if you get a new engine is a pass or fail rating so there is variation in cars that pass. Tiptronic transmissions support the crankshaft better and do not have as many RMS failures. Also, the plastic rear window on pre 2003 cars can be a pain to clean and may become brittle and crack. The cars are still great fun to drive, though.
