Boxster Maintenance @ 100K Miles?

A few years ago, when I test drove a brand new Boxster, the salesman made a pitch that only @ 100K miles an engine drop was necessary for major scheduled maintenance! Well, I am considering a 2000 Boxster Tiptronic with 90K miles. For those familiar with Boxster maintenance needs, what would be needed, now or soon, with this car? Also, there are 99 and 2000 911 Carrera's around with similar mileage for roughly $10~12K more. From a cost of ownership perspective, which would be better, Boxster or Carrera, similar mileage and condition? Regards

You do not need to drop the motor for anything on these cars for maintenance. 90k svc includes Oil change spark plugs fuel filter air filter cabin filter transmission fluid change Potential problem areas Dual Mass flywheel - they seem to go around 100K miles oil air seperator rear main seals spark plug tube leaks. rear mains and dual mass flywheel are pricey - the others are fairly inexpensive AFJ

AFJ, Thanks for your reply. Now, a few more questions: 1) Does Dual Mass Flywheel apply to a Boxster Tip? 2) Any issues with high mileage Tiptronic transmissions? 3) Any issues with high mileage Boxsters passing California emissions? 4) Roughly how much for the Rear Main Seal and Spark Plug Tube replacement done by a shop? Thanks

No issues for high mileage tiptronics provided they have not been abused. Fluid changes are expensive. The fluid is about $17.00 per quart. As long as the catalyst and air injection system are functioning, there should be no problem passing CA Spark plug tubes are cheap, about $10.00 for a new tube and 2 O-rings. Rear main seals are rather expensive. They are only changed if there is clear evidence of leaking. Due to the known problems with the rear main seals, it is best to let sleeping dogs lie rather than change it for preventative maintenance. Replacing it will run about $700. AFJ
