Need HELP with first oil change!

I am doing my first oil change on the 2002 Boxster S, read the Pelican instructions, drained oil, went to change filter, and the hole in the new filter element is smaller than the one currently in the car. When I dropped the old filter out, some kind of black adapter? also came out, that seems to fit into the top of the paper filter. So, since the car is sans oil, I decided to reuse the old filter temporarily. maybe i put this adapter in backwards, but now when I start the car, I get "low oil pressure" warning on the dash.

The new mahle filter number that i bought is 996 107 225 52. Pelican says the is superceded by 996 107 225 53.

So, is the adapter backwards? Can I drop the filter without draining all of the oil?

Help please!

It turns out that what I thought was an adapter was actually the spring mechanism that is supposed to be attached to the inside of the oil filter housing, it is loose. So I ended up just pushing it into the bottom of the filter, & now all seems well, no low oil pressure warning. Is this OK, or should I order a new oil filter housing?

TIA.

You can actaully order the filter and housing together.... Provided that who you order from someone who knows that they are offered this way through Porsche. I would also recommend Genuine parts on the filter since the price isn't so far off.
