Porsche Crest how wide can tires get???

Hey, just curious. I have 2001 Boxster S currently with Yokohama AVS Sport tires, 225's up front and 265's in the back. What is the maximum tire size I could put on it though? Is it possible to fix 12" rear tread? that would be sweet n' beefy lookin'

merry christmas

With your current size tires, sounds like you have the optional 7.5 and 9x18" wheels? I'm sure you're familiar with TireRack - to see if you can squeeze 285s on the rears.

Most people opt for wider wheels. You can get 8.5" in front and many 10" wides in the rear, but watch your offsets. I've got aftermarket optional 8" and 9.5x18" for Autocross and use 245/285 tires.... but I've got aftermarket coilovers that change the amount and type of room available inboard. If your running the stock suspension, 245s in front 'might' rub up against your spring platforms depending upon tire diameter and rub on the inner liner at full steering lock. The rear 285 potential will be dependent upon those offsets and getting enough room inboard to just clear the struts.

good luck,

kj

Porsche Crest wooh...

okay, so my boxster has 18" turbo look rims, with 225/40 ZR's, and 265/35 Y's with the stock 986 suspension set up. so would 245/40 Y and 285/35 ZR Yokohama AVS Sport tires work? also, could I fit a 225/40 Y and 265/35 Y Michelin Pilot Sport Cup set up on the same rims with the current set up? and since you auto-x, im going to my first one with the PCA this january 6th (OMG HURRAY!!!) and depending on how it goes would like to invest in another set of rims/tires for track days and auto-x events/D.E.'s. do you recommend any certain porsche rim and set of rubber slicks? i suppose i should also post this in the driver's forum... thanks again!

From the TOYO website, please note the column that spells out the prefered rim width for various tire sizes...

http://marktg.toyotires.com/file/30029.pdf -then go to page 2 of the PDF

For Toyo, and for the R888 tire in particular, they recommend a 9.5-10.5" width rim for a 285 width tire; For a 245 width tire they recommend a 8-9.5" width rim. You will likely find similar info for other brands.

Congrats on getting out to an AX soon! Just take the car with the tires you have.. while tires make the greatest single improvement in lap times, SEAT TIME will make sure you get the most out of whatever is on your car.

I personally found the Boxster, with 225/265 width tires to understeer too much for my liking. I wanted to run 245s all around, but sold the car after 1 season.

I would encourage a second set of rims/tires for Drivers Ed and Autocross uses. Be sure to check out the rule book first. Sometimes, changing tire sizes or going to a dedicated AX tire will put you in a higher class and might leave you a bit outgunned.

Enjoy!

Porsche Crest

yep, understeer and sadly, with 225/265's and only about 260 bhp, its hard to kick the rear end out unless the road is wet. thanks alot for the info! i really appreciate it
