Just Bought a 987 Boxster
So my friend has a 996 911 which he lets me drive occasionally and I loved it, the sound, responsiveness, and vehicle dynamics are fantastic. So I decided to drink the cool aid and get a Porsche as a daily driver. After much searching and several near misses with older 911s that ended up needing significant and expensive engine rebuilds I found a 2005 Boxster with 13000 miles that I bought last week.
I Love the car. I was worried at first that it wouldn't "scratch the porsche itch" but I was wrong. It is a fantastic car, since I have gotten it I have put 2000 miles on it and about 50 on my E60 M5. It is nowhere near as fast as the M5 but it is waaay more rewarding to drive. I consider it the best decision I have made in awhile and I look forward to being a member of this community which I hear is the best place around to get technical info on all manner of porsches. Envious here. Congrats on the purchase and glad to hear another who enjoys the Boxster and doesn't fall into the "less than a 911" trap.
Sadly this board is a little slow when it comes to Boxster chat, but an otherwise great community. (Minus a few bad apples, but what board doesn't have those?) I also try to keep up with Rennlist.com boards, but they (foolishly) have separate boards for the 986, the 987, and the Cayman cars.  Enjoy that car!

It is funny that you say the "less than a 911" stereotype. I have heard all of that stuff too. I have also heard/read that the 987 boxster and cayman are actually a better platform than the 911. The mid-engine layout and porsche handling make for a car that is dyanmically superior.
I also heard (rumor) that porsche left the LSD out of the initial versions of the Cayman S due to the fact that it would perform on par with the naturally aspirated 911s. Personally I love both cars and I think that the cayman/boxster are a great addition to the porsche line-up and are much better complimentary models to the 911 than past models i.e. the 944/914/928 etc. |

You heard right. Overall the Boxster / Cayman were tuned specifically to fit a marketing scheme, not max performance. But they (Porsche) seem to be easing out of that, at least a little bit. Too many people (i.e. journos) are praising the Cayman so much, it would be foolish of Porsche to continue to leave the middies so far behind.
