From 911 forum interested in a Boxster
Hello all - thought I might pick this one up to fix and re-sell:
Cars for Sale: 2001 Porsche Boxster S in Blakely, PA 18452: Convertible Details - 278073767 - AutoTrader.com Looks pretty well cared for. How tough is it to R and R a trans to have some-one else rebuild? How much would it cost if it is just one gear and I do the R and R myself? Thanks for the thoughts -Dan

Are you trying to make a profit? Unfortunately I've seen a lot of "perfectly good" early "S" Boxsters not too far from that price already. With the market where it is, I would speculate you'll have a hard time selling on again.
On the other hand, I do see you buying the car, fixing it, and keeping it because you love it so much! ![]() I'm sorry I don't have a lot of info on costs to rebuild a trans, but you'd be wise to put in a new clutch and probably wise to also update the IMS bearing. I'm guessing in parts that's maybe $1400 together? That's before getting into the trans.

If it needs 3rd gear syncro it will most likely need 2nd gear syncro & bearings too. You can price the parts here on Pelican & figure $1000. labor & $30. a litre for Porsche gear oil plus shipping. 6-speeds on E-bay run $2500. - $1,500. but might be as worn as what you have unless you know the history. Like Doug said I would replace IMS bearing & clutch while you are there. It's not that hard to do even without a lift so you should make a decent profit. Figure 3 days labor + trans rebuild. Document your work (pics & receipts) & it should be worth $20,000 easy.

Good luck with that. Its not a 20K car to me.. not with 80K miles. At best its a $15K car. Do a look at KBB/NADA and get a better feel. Something tells me a dealer would wholesale this car for $12K (and thats WITH a good transmission)

Thanks for the thoughts -
Yes I am seeing about 12K for this car wholesale. 10K private party and 7.5 trade in. Is this about right? If so I'll offer him 7K and walk if he decline. Does this sound like a reasonable offer to all the experts?

Well, with the Turbo, it is worth big money.
7K could get you a nice project, but selling for profit is harder and harder as values drop. Just 2 years ago some friends of mine sold a '98 2.5L tiptronic for nearly 20K. That's not even a 10K car today, IMHO. While a S will fetch a bit more. I don't see that car selling for more than 12 fixed up given the high miles. What's your time worth? |

Very appreciated coments.
My time is free - I love to work on P-cars. It truely is theraly for me. That being said I do like to make some profit to spend on more tools and porsche toys. So here is what I'm thinking: 7500 for the car and tax 1500 for a good used trans 1000 for a clutch and incidentals Even if I sell it for 11K I would come out on top. Am I off anywhere? -Dan
