Still have not found the problem with my baby. Suggestions please. No matter how big or small. I have posted two time prior to this one. Since those have been posted, I have ordered the electronic part from the ignition and am waiting for it.

October 05, 2010: '02 Boxster still shutting off

Hello everyone, let me fill you guys in. My car shuts off without any warning. Since the last time I posted, I have replaced all of the relays. Ran the car and still had the same problem. Broke down and replaced the fuel pump. Started the car and before i could celebrate it shut off again. Connected to it and checked for codes: no codes found. Please help. Going crazy

August 24, 2010: Intermittent shut down

Hello everyone.
I am at a loss here. I have a 2002 boxster. it has been always good to me but lately it is starting to hiccup. First the wing stopped extending and retracting automatically. Second, the alarm goes of by itself sporadically. and third but definitely not least..... I willl be going down the road and it will just shut off!!!! No spitting or sputtering, just off. I then try to crank it and it doesn't fire. I willl wait for about half an hour and it willl crank. i returned home and felt the relay and it was really hot. removed it and cooled it off. Installed it and it ran good for about half an hour then shut off again. I replaced the fuel pump relay and it worked a whole day. I thought i had it licked. The following morning, I didn't even make it out to the main road. Relay was hot again, removed and installed the old relay and was able to get back to the house. PLEASE HELP

If your fuel pump relay is getting hot hot, then it must be the fuel pump itself going bad or you have a short in the circuit going to the fuel pump. just my .02

Thanks for the reply Harry. I already changed out the fuel pump" Ouch" and ohm tested the wiring to it. I appreciate the help.

Just another thing I found. The lock switch has the red light illuminated and the air bag light came on.

Have you checked the alarm control unit under your seat? Also make sure your ignition switch isn't sticking.

Thank you BYpro. I received the ignition switch yesterday but it was the one for the late model instead of the early. Have to send it back and I have the right one coming to me now. I'll let you guys know what happens.

Thanks for responding BT911. I was thinking about that because it feels like it would have something to do with the alarm. It looks like to me that the car shuts off at approximately the same time every time. Havent timed it but I will this afternoon. It's like a delay engine kill. How would I go about checking the Alarm control unit?

Is it possible immobilizer box under the seat got wet?

I think I recall that the immobilizer is matched to the dme, so as a test I think you would need to swap both.

Thanks Dad911. For as long as I have had the car it has not had any water leaks. I cannot atest for before i had ther car.

How could I test the alarm control unit without replacing it?

There are dozens of signal wires in & out of immobilizer. Far easier to swap. I would swap immobilizer & dme with known good ones. Or better yet, try them in another car.

Have you changed the ignition switch yet? It's cheap, relatively easy, and they do wear out anyway.

Can you tell why the engine quits? You mentioned the fuel pump earlier. Does it shut off before the engine quits?

Process of elimination...
I would change the ign. switch first because it is cheap, easy, and a likely suspect. The DME and immobilizer are a can-o-worms because they are tied to the car and key. Swapping them out is no simple task. You can disconnect/reconnect them or open them up to inspect for damage. Rodent damage to the harness is also a possibility especially where it passes through a bulkhead or firewall. Good luck!

Thank you Dad911 I will try that. The car shuts off like if you just turn the key off. All the lights come on and then the car will not start for another 15-20 minutes.

Thanks Cajun so far i have not seen any visual damage to the internals of the controller and to the harness. I ordered the switch but got the wrong one. Ordered the corre3ct one and am now waiting for it.

re-reading your first post.....

If you swap fuel pump relay, does the car restart instantly, or do you still have to wait 15 minutes for a re-start?

Have you tried to read/reset the codes from the OBD-II?

Is the fuel pump working on failed restarts? Does relay click?

No codes logged or existing. fuel pump works on restarting. First time I swapped out relay I think I had let too much time go by and coincedently it started, because I tried it again and it didn't start.

FINALLY GOT A CODE!!!!!!!!!!! Pulled a crank position sensor code on the OBDII.

A failed crank sensor would be sweet, cheap and easy!

The only problem is that I dont find a " Crank Sensor" all that shows is the "Cam Sensor"

Easy DYI - remove the right rear wheel, the sensor is located on the side of the engine block. Use a 10" + 8" socket extension with an allen socket to remove the bolt, then release the connector near the AOS bellows.

Thanks Cajun!!! You helped me out alot. I got it out but come to find out that the crank position sensor is actually called the Impulse sensor. Unfortunately i ordered the wrong sensor. Might as well install them now. My "impulse sensor should be in today and will install. Will update as soon as it is in.
