IMS Problem
How do you know if you have an IMS problem? I have a 1999 Boxster with 71,000 miles and I have a little oil under the middle of the engine on my garage floor. A few drops once in a while. Car runs fine.

Most discover they have an IMS problem when the engine catastrophically fails. While small oil leaks can come from the IMS seals, the more common cause of oil drips in the RMS. Small leaks (a few small spots on the floor) can be ignored for a time, major leaking is another story.

Oil could be leaking from a few places. Oil leak is not the symptom of an IMS going bad.
Some find metal in the filter before the bearing fails, but there was none in mine. There is no reliable way to catch a bearing going bad. |

Well actually oil can leak through the outer seal on the IMS and, because the inner seal has failed for this to happen, it can be a sign of increased potential for failure. Not usually the cause of small leaks from the back of the engine though.
And a very good mechanic with the right equipment can measure the cam timings on both sides and a variation can point to a need to check the IMS. But the mechanic must really know what he is doing inside a Porsche engine. The average dealer tech hasn't a chance. |

Have your oil analyzed. If the bearing is going, it will show in the oil.
At least that's what I read here. |

At 70K I would not worry...sounds like you have a good motor. Be happy, don't worry.

The leak is likely RMS.
If you haven't replaced your clutch -- then consider that doing the clutch and RMS at the same time. Then strongly consider doing an IMSR for maybe $600 plus a little labor more. You are not safe at any mileage from an IMS failure. mike
