Nine years and 19k miles...installed LN low temp t-stat and will replace original water pump this spring (per Raby recommendation). Am considering my friend (who does 911 engine rebuilds) to replace my IMS, just for peace of mind. I feel fortunate because Charles Navarro is a member of Chicago Region PCA, very willing to give good advice and really supports the PCA community.

103k miles on a 2000 S. Not a highly maintained car.

84K on my '99 Tip when I had the IMS replaced. Bearing looked ok but seal was gone, smelled burned and felt a little loose. Haven't heard back from LN as to it's condition but I feel like I got to it just in time.

48K before LN IMS is installed.
Bearing looked good with small amount of play.

2000S removed engine at 88,500 miles for rebuild, IMS bearing shaft had 1/4" movement side to side. I estimate that double row bearing would have failed within 4k miles.

2001 3.2 just disassembled for rebuild same mileage as above engine, IMS bearing seemed like new. That IMS is at LN for bearing upgrade now.

76,000 on my 1998 986.

I bought it with 67,000 miles and am the 5TH owner but had maint. records that showed oil changes at 5-7,000 miles!
I will continue to change the oil every 5,000+

I changed mine for the LN bearing at 84k. Bearing was good but seal was not. I'm glad I changed it when I did.

send an IMS to LN for "bearing upgrade" from a 2001S? Was it a replacement engine from the '03-'04 era where the entire shaft has to be replaced?
