Engine Temp Gauge - Probably a Dumb Question

Well my son pulled the bumper cleaned out thd mess , installed gril mesh.and on my way home it hit 250 red light came on.pulled over to let it cool.. guess i ll take it to a shop next for water pump inspection. crap!

turns out, bad thermostat, waterpump , heater control valve.
I added a new cap too.

Now in 90 plus outdoor temps it is running about 190.

2000 986 S in AZ yesterday. Air temp 116 running with AC on temp gauge read 180 .but the red light was flashing.. Can anyone tell me why?

Four functions of the coolant warning light:

1. Engine coolant level too low

— light flashes slowly (0.5 Hz)

2. Engine compartment temperature too high

— light flashes slowly (0.5 Hz) (engine compartment blower might be faulty)

3. Engine coolant temperature too high

— light is lit; pointer on the right

4. Temperature sensor at water outlet faulty

— light flashes rapidly (1 Hz); pointer on the right

Note

The temperature warning in point three is indicated if the conditions "engine coolant temperature too high" and "engine coolant level too low" are present simultaneously

(1Hz = 1 flash per second. 0.5Hz = 2 seconds per flash)

Lo temp thermostats, do not make your car run cooler. They only open up the system at an earlier temp. So if it is quick coffee run, there might be a small advantage. But 20 minutes+ it is what is.

BTW, PCA has a YouTube video on front bumper removal and cleaning of your radiators.

I would also suggest you install grill screens in the bumper to prevent it reoccurring in the future. I have Zunsport inserts in my personal car, years old and still look brand new, and have never had to clean out the radiators again. Once and done..............

I can't find these grill screens for the 2001 986 Boxster S. Might you have a link for these? The ones Pelican comes up with are rennline.
