Another small update as I await parts delivery to finish this up. I found a person that builds a knock meter that could be tuned to a bearing with the beginnings of pitting or flaking etc.

He sells these on Ebay for 50$ w/free shipping. This is cheaper than what I am able to put together. I will be looking to change the box it is in, and warning light to fit the appearance of the dash.

So far this will make it $118.

Excellent. Could also be ideal for 2 stroke snowmobiles, especially if you get a bad tank of fuel.

You're correct, It could be used to listen to wheel bearings, the beginnings of a rod knock, even listen to your waterpump. etc, etc, etc.

A couple of quick questions: How is your bearing system different from the Insaro system introduced in Europe about two years ago? Exactly where would the knock sensor be mounted so that it is listening to the IMS bearing and not confused by other normal mechanicals’ of the engine?

I haven't seen any signs of the Insaro being installed on this side of the pond. No idea of the availability of instruction materials, qualified installers, tools, price etc. Nor numbers installed.

JFP,
The Insaro system is a very well eng. piece and I am sure without a doubt it will work as expected. I believe he says when it fails, it will last 5 mins. so you can pull over to a safe place. Exactly what mine will do, but with over the counter parts that anyone can buy on the fly cheap. The bearings also fit on the original parts.
As for the sensor, when I was messing around with it, I stumbled onto how to make it a directional mic instead of a wide sweep listening device. That will be disclosed later and is an easy mod to the sensor. The sensor will be located in the IMShaft pointing toward the bearing.

Feelyx, Appearance wise. Yes recessed more. If you could get a blank for that hole, drill out the center to match the outside white lines of it and recess it behind that. That would be kewl. Keep on trucking. Or Boxstering?

I'm thinking spray tinting the inside of the red cap so it won't be noticeable. Until it goes off.....

The way it looks, is something you'd see in a James Bond car. Like the seat ejection button.

Agree on the audible warning and have it overcome a radio too. The beacon looks good to me and hopefully one could see it with the sun shining.

Just in case the flashing light and the audible alarm siren are not enough perhaps a stiff squirt of water in the face would do the trick! Something similar to the flower on a clown's lapel. You could tap into the windshield washer tank without too much modification.

LMAO Steve. Good one. Maybe something with alcohol. Then you could drown your troubles at the same time.

so... if that's the way we are going... Then" The IMS monkey" will be the best solution.
(look for "trunk monkey trilogy" on you tube. I'm posting from my iPad so can't give you a link)
