oil change and seatbelt trouble
Hi to ALL
I have a 1998 Boxster with 51k miles tiptonic oil change-i have been reading the 101 project book and its states that it would be better to use regular oil then synthetic just because of the miles tend not to seep through the old gaskets..True?? seatbelt (airbag light)..I am told by Porsche that i need to change the complete driver's side seatbelt and replace with another one so the light can go out..which would cost approx $1000.0 (which of is course crazy),....is there an easy fix for this Thank you all for your help in this matter Anthony |

Regarding the oil... your mileage may vary, but I've never had a problem. Even with a 911 that I used to drive daily, I changed to full synthetic with 30,000 miles on it and never had a problem. Personally, I think the advantages of full synthetic outweigh the possibility of any potential leaks that may (or may not) crop up. Just my opinion though.
Edit: and now a friend owns that same 911SC and it has over 200,000 miles on it... with no significant engine work. It's on clutch number 3 now, with no other problems. ![]()

Oil and seatbelt
1st on the oil I have swithced over to the Castrol Full Syn 5W-40 havent looked back and the car runs fine.
2 on the seat belt check the connections and make sure you dont have a loose wire or connector...do all of this with the KEY OUT of the ignition. As a last resort if you need a new assmebly try one of the good breaker yards like LA Dismantlers Good luck |

my understanding is that once the airbag light is on, even if you fix the problem you'll need a Durametric (or take it to the dealer) to reset the airbag light, it won't go out by itself

I have a 1999 Boxster that had an air bag light come on. Porsche redesigned the buckles, module and harness due to all the problems they had with the old design. I had an independent shop read the code and it came up with a bad buckle. They reset the light just to make sure that was the issue. Light came back on about 4 hours later. To make a long story short you can either keep replacing the buckles without curing the underlying problem or have the system updated with the design fix. An independent shop can probably install the upgrade, but Porshe will need to code it and they won't warranty the repair. Having Porsche repair it is not cheap but it solved the problem and it is warrantied for 2 years. I have had no issues since and it has been over a year.

There are many possible causes for the airbag light. Belt buckles are one. Grounding wires are another. There is a TSB available here.
My '01 went through 4 trips to the dealer over its 10 years, 2 belt buckles and 2 grounding wires. None of those trips cost anywhere near $1k. |
