Idle drops with Air Cond running
New to the Boxster. Have a 98 2.5L and she runs a steady 800 rpm (about 780 if I really look close) without air conditioning selected. As soon as I turn on the AC, the compressor kicks in and that causes a drop in the idle rpm to 500-600 rpm. Then it will rev up to close to 1,000 rpm before settling back to the 800 rpm range. Sometimes I can see a drop as low as 400 rpm. Never stalls. However, when I'm going slow (ie: parking lot) and I have to be on / off the gas, each time I come off the gas with the clutch depressed it sure looks like it's headed for a stall. Is this "normal"? If not, any thoughts on some areas I should focus on for troubleshooting? Since I just got the car, I thought I'd start with a fuel filter as a possible weak area...

Any Word?
Hi Spike, I just joined the forum... and read your post... this same Issue just started happeing to my '99 986... wondering if you found the problem? I'm not sure if this is relevant or just a coincidence... but i had just bought an WIFI OBD2 device... and bought both REV and FUZZYCAR APPS for my IPAD... both the apps worked, and I tried them out on each of my cars.... including the Boxster... the next day the idle issue of dropping and surging started happening ( never actually stalled out yet ) I'm wondering if me tapping into the OnBoard Computer reset something... I mention this to you as I'm wondering if you had your car hooked up to an OBD2 unit.... or if a mechanic or garage did?
Any help is appreciated... Thanks IMACMAN ![]() |

Good question - I just got the car so I don't have a lot of history. After reading what you wrote, I did have a shop (not a Pcar familiar shop) put a OBD2 on the car "just to see" if there were any codes. I don't recall having run the A/C prior to that event, so I couldn't tell you if they did anything during the process to affect the A/C idle...
I did post the question in another forum, and suggested I might look at changing the fuel filter at a minimum...here's a suggestion that someone had: "The ECU is programmed to compensate for the load of the a/c compressor at idle by increasing the air/fuel flow so the idle remains relatively constant. It sounds like that function is not working properly. I'd look at the MAF or the idle control valve. A partially clogged fuel filter would typically work ok at idle (very low fuel flow rate) but not flow enough fuel at high speeds and you'd get lethargic acceleration and poor performance at high throttle openings." So, I'm thinking now that I'll check the MAF, and still do the fuel filter to baseline the filter. I'm hoping a good cleaning of the MAF will help...the idle is rock solid without the A/C running so I'm not sure that the idle control valve would be an issue...perhaps someone else has insight on that... Good luck - I'll keep you posted what I find out - will be a few days before I have time to get inside and do the work.... |

SpikeJr, which part of the country do you live? I may have a functioning Idle Air Control Valve that you can swap out to see if it fixes your problem.

Ah, nevermind. From your license plate post, I see you're in Ohio. PM me your address and I'll get it in the mail to you.
