Cv boot question

Silly question. When replacing the cv boots, remove inside cv joint and both boots, do you slide the new outer boot down from the inside or does the outer cv joint have to come off? Also, how do you know that enough axle grease in the joint before clamping closed.

Thanks

You are right after taking the inner one off you slide the outer one on. you can purchase the grease from pelican it comes in a pouch which is just enough for one joint.

What a great forum. I completed replacing all four boots and a cv joint this past Saturday. Interesting, my dad taught me how to do just about everything but how to work on a car. Just wasn't his thing. Researching this forum a gazillion times, referring to Wayne's 101 projects book and purchasing from Pelican gave me the knowledge and confidence to do the project. I did the job exactly how it was explained in the book. Why am I having so much fun?

2001 Boxster S purchased 12-27-11. 48,000 miles (now 53,000).

Car was given a clean bill of health by an independent Porsche shop. The boots were all good then too.

Jobs completed so far
Oil change
Transmission fluid change
New plugs
Boots all changed
One cv joint replaced
Engine cleaned

I'm so glad I found this spirited community
