Need help in decoding engine number
I bought a 2004 3.2l Boxter S from a Porsche dealer in another city last summer. It had 36,500 miles on it then and has 37,200 now. When I got the maintenance records with the car, I found it got a Porsche remanufactured engine in August 2010 under warranty at 30,750 miles due to IMS failure.
I would like to interpret the engine number to find out the date of remanufacture and any other useful data pertaining to configuration of the IMS and RMS that is in the new engine. I saw a thread on this somewhere recently, but can't find it now. |

Any factory replacement engine after 2005 would have the "final solution" non serviceable IMS and the latest RMS.
Interesting that it was a warranty replacement on a 6 year old car............

post your engine number. I believe that if it has an 'AT' in the number it is a reman engine. The case numbers will tell what model year they were manufactured for.

Need help with engine number
My engine number is M96/24AT67466236. Thanks Luke at Sunset Imports for the great info. My car got the new engine in Aug 2010 by a P dealer under goodwill warranty probably because it had been serviced there all it's life until the IMS failure. Luke said the last production 3.2l to go into a 986 was 6000nnnnn. Later serial numbers were for replacement. So, my new engine got the latest IMS and RMS mods. It now has a little over 7k miles on it. This is my 7th Porsche over 40 years. I like the Box.
