2006 cayman S issues?

do the caymans have the same IMS and RMS issues as the boxsters? looking at a 2006 cayman S with 100,000 miles on it....any other thoughts appreciated

Yes, they use the same engine. You should also be aware that any Boxster or Cayman built after 2005 and up to 2009-10 have the "final solution" IMS bearing in them that cannot be upgraded without a total engine rebuild..........

Just to be clear, model years 2006-2008 are the "final solution" years. Model years 2009+ are Gen. II.

What JFP means, in models from 05 (some of them) 06,07,08.
The bearing is the final solution. In other words, cannot be replaced.
These models are still considered as candidates for IMS failure.
Models from 09-10 and up, do not have the IMS at all, so this problem is solved with these models.

2009 was a transitional year for the base 2.9L engine, it had no IMS as it was a 9A1 design, but it also lacked DFI (all 2009 "S" engines are DFI). In 2010, the 2.9L rather abruptly disappeared to be replaced with a 2.7L 9A1, with DFI. A lot of people think the 2.9L engine was a better performer, even without DFI.

You also have your "generations" wrong, the M97 engine was "Gen II" for the M96/97, the 2009 2.9L 9A1 was "Gen I", the 2010 2.7L version was "Gen II" for the base 9A1 engine.

I believe the 2.9 engine was the base engine for Gen ll cars through 2012. I have a 2012 base Cayman with a 2.9 engine.

The non DFI 2.9L engine became the base for the 2009 Cayman, but not the Boxster after 2009, that uses the DFI 2.7L:

The 2012 Cayman also went "retrograde" to the 2.7L engine as well (page three of the engine section):
