IMS seems like the biggest issue discussed here.

I have a 2001 Boxster base . Has 40k miles on it now. Got it 1.5 years ago with 30k
miles. Have had cv joints done. You could check these for oil leak/tears in the boots. Of course the usual IMS concern. I have had installed the IMS Guardian. Check coolant - no oil in it? Check trunk dry to ensure no reservoir leak. Air cond. blows cold air? Rear main seal leak? Mine has mist on engine so did nothing about it. No problem. Clutch feels right? No slipping? Check for accident damage on PPI? Ask for receipts for all work done. Do your research on the IMS. This is not fully comprehensive this list. You might want to check more than one Boxster as it is too easy to fall for the first one you see. The more you try the more you can establish what is normal. PPI is a must for one you are serious about. Enjoy your search. Let us know what you decide! |

Check the front motor mount, look/listen/feel for any vibrations around 3000rpm or a 'clunk' during hard shifting...
If you know what a wrench is, then it is great car to work on.... Last edited by pcmpete; 03-16-2013 at 08:08 AM.. |

Probably a $9000 car if the seller is motivated. You shouldn't have to pay more than 10K unless there are receipts for a lot of the preemptive maintenance work needed for these cars. Like a new upgraded water pump. There are a few more that should have been done in 45K miles.
I had the A/C evaporator way down deep in the dash give up last fall and it cost me 3K to replace it. These cars have a few quirks and cost like a 996 and 997 to fix. Make sure the top is working perfectly. |

As far as price goes, every area is different. There is no way you can find a decent
45k 2001 non s model for anywhere close to $14500 in Alberta The biggest porcshe dealer in Calgary, South Center was asking over $22,000 for a '99 last summer. I realize its just their asking price, and don't know what they settled on, but I've dealt with them before, and they won't accept anywhere close to $8000 less. Private individuals usually do there homework and follow prices relative to dealers. Just my 2 cents...............Pat in Lethbridge |

Any P dealership asks a lot more for the same car as a private sale. I find the private seller generally is not a professional seller and they are more flexible in price. Also buying privately you have more access to sellers' receipts for work done. P dealer may have a warranty on a car as an incentive but you are paying indirectly for it. It is a buyer's market even in spring. In Canada you pay more for the same car in the US. Yes there are regional disparities. Enjoy your search. |

FWIW, this car would be 10-12k around here. Expect prices to increase though as weather warms up. The 03-05 is higher than <02, and >06-11 is much more $$$

These cars are old. So condition is everything and maintenance is important. Don't buy the first one you see.

I would say to expect around 3k in maintenance at minimum on top of your purchase price. Unless you need a new flywheel, then more.

Make sure you ask about the IMS! Intermediate Bearing has a tendency to go out on the Boxsters, some as early as 30k miles. If it has been replaced, great. If not, plan on it. This is a part that can cause engine failure and it is usually replaced as preventative maint when you do the clutch.

Make sure it comes with two electronic keys.
Manual, spare tire, pump

My 996 2001 came with out the pump to fill the spare tire. Maybe the Boxster's use a different means to fill the spare if it is not already inflated, Sorry to confuse you if that is the case.
Now you got me wondering does the Boxster come with two electronic keys or just one? So you have the Manual? Does it also have the service history manual with it?

Hey, I have 2 remote keys and I think I also have the service history manual with a stamp or 2 in it. Even have the window sticker. I think my spare is inflated, only really glanced at it under a cover in the front.

FWIW I have an 01S and would not sell for less than 24K. It has almost 90K miles. I could part it out for that. Yes it has options and you need to see what the car has on it not just the year. Guess area of the country have greater or lesser values. The value some people miss is what it would cost to buy a new on. I have thought about it many times but the numbers never make it worth it considering what a great car it is. I had the rear seal done at about 35K I think. Alternator, actually just the regulator at about 75K. Other than that trouble free, best car I have ever owned. So I guess what I saying look at the total picture not just price. You may make a killing with a low price one but you may get less than you think. he only thing I dont like is the 01 plastic window but I have a hard top on most of the time. One thing to be aware of is if the engine goes your 9K purchase just went to about 24K, but hey you would have a new engine. I think you will love the car. Good luck on your search and find.
