Noise from front passenger side

I've got a whining noise that seams to be coming from my passenger side fender. It happens occasionally while the car is idling. It Will go away if I give it the slightest amount of gas. The car runs fine but the noise is annoying. I don't think it's the radiator fan, it seams like it's coming from farther back. It was doing it today and it was coming somewhere around the gas cap or possibly a little farther back.

Again it doesn't do it all the time.

Any idea on what is there or what could be causing this?

The car is a 2000 S .

Thanks

Two guesses: heater / AC blower fan, AC expansion valve. Does it go away when the heater / AC display says off?

Mine had a whistling or whining sound coming from the gas cap area that turned out to be one of the fuel vapor valves that sit inside the front passenger wheel well behind the plastic splash shield. It also would stop if I accelerated but it only happened when the car was in motion so I'm not sure if that's what you've got going on.

I had a friend look for it today while it was making the noise and it was coming from the front of the gas cap area. It stopped when he put his finger over a hole there. I'm assuming it's one of the valves Steve is talking about.

Hopefully I at least know where to start now, thanks.

Fuel Filler Vent Valve

Just caught this. Take a look at this article we wrote about the filler valve and see if this sounds similar to your issue.
