"Coughing" Noise

I have a 2000 Boxster. When the engine is cold and I start it to let it warm up it will idle at the normal rpm for about 15 seconds and then the rpm's will drop and you get this "coughing" noise from the engine. It does not shut down but just keeps coughing. If I put my foot on the accelerator and increase the rpms for about 5 seconds it smooths out and is fine. Any ideas???
