Transmission fluid change

Hello everyone,

I am starting project 38 in Wayne's 101 projects book and I was wondering if the Boxster needs to have the weight off of the rear wheels before I start removing the transmission cover and aluminum braces? I have the back of the car on ramps now and the front is on jack stands to level the car. When I started to remove the bolts holding the cover on, it seems to me that there is a lot of tension on it. I'm not sure if removing these braces will cause the car to drop at all and then be difficult to replace. Any advice is welcome! Thanks again in advance!

well, I got a tip from Nick at Pelican Parts that the car must be off the ground. I guess I will be getting more jack stands.

Another helpful thing I found is if you use a ratchet type tie down strap to pull things back in alignment it is way easier to get the bolts in.

Thanks for the tip! I will be attacking this project tomorrow morning. The car is already up on stands, just a matter of getting it done!

Job done, fairly easy after the car is on jack stands. I was surprised to find that the drain plug was not magnetic?!? I though they were on every car, it would make sense for it to be. Next time I change the fluid I will be installing a magnetic plug if I can find one.

Next time, consider having a 2" hole beneath the drain plug cut into the metal plate under the trans while it is off, then you will never have to remove it again.

You can actually do a drain by using the fill hole. Just make a fill tool out of a piece of soft metal tubing. Put a hose on it and it will syphon the pan empty. Of course when its time to do the filter there is no way around it. BTW there are small fairly weak magnets in the pan. You could upgrade those at filter time and or just add an external magnet to the bottom of the pan.

Jfp, I thought the plate is not supposed to be modified. Have you done this with success?
Turbo, are you suggesting dropping the pan and getting a good cleaning done in there?

Many times, we use an electrician's metal hole punch:

Cuts a clean hole that only needs a quick de-burring before the plate is ready to go back.

That's a great idea. I'll have to look into that next time the plate comes off.

If its a good cleaning, and filter change there is only one way and the plate and pan has to come off. However, if you want to do a partial change maybe at 15 or 30K the method I use works without compromising the aluminum plate. Actually when I considered doing the hole for the drain in the plate its was in a less than optimal spot, so I thought.

Thanks for the input! I'll have to think about taking the whole thing apart next time to get to the filter. I didn't know there was one in there. Next time transmission fluid is on the to do list, I'll be sure to investigate further with respect to filters and such! Thanks again!
