99 Boxster will not idle properly

Hi There,

Been working on this issue for a bit.

Car is very hard to start - have to use starting fluid to get it to fire up.

Will idle a 100 to 200 rpm for about 5 sec or so when the starter is released and then dies unless the starter fluid is used.

Once car catches it runs really smooth but have to keep the throttle open and RPM above 8-900 - Engine rev's nicely just can take the foot off the gas or it dies.

I have pulled the throttle body and cleaned it - It was actually very clean to start. - Pulled the Throttle position sensor and Idle Control Valve. Clean both -

Check to see if the Idle control valve worked by supplying power to it - It opened and closed just fine.

This is where I get a bit confused - I was expecting when the ignition is on but the car is not running that the plug to the ICV would be hot on the open side -

Well both sides are hot so when I turn the car on the ICV starts to hum as if the motor is active but the valve does not open - I gather with power going to each side the valve is held in place.

I did not try to turn the car over to see what would happen.

Need some help here - I have heard an ICV can look to operate properly when checked with a power source but still won't work properly when in the car.

Is there suppose to be power to both sides of the electrical plug going to the valve at start up

Am I looking at the wrong thing here.

Basics

Car can started using starter fluid
Runs smooth and revs very nicely once fired up
If throttle is released car dies.
When starting if no starting fluid is used the car with idle at a very low RPM for 5 or so seconds then quit.
Cleaned ICV, TPS and Throttle Body.
Have check for vacuum leaks - none found
Have replaced the CPS as it was a code that was in during a couple of the attempted start. Did not rectify the problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

Duezzer

Garage
I'd say that the ICV is dead.

Installed the ICV - no change to idle situation - Ran car longer this time and we have a new code - Coil on Cyl#4 missfire - From other readings they state to change all coils at once - Ordered new coils - Sure this won't fix the idle issue - once coils come in will install and update. If idle issue ensues will be booking the car into a quality high end shop.

If anyone knows a good shop in Calgary Alberta Canada please forward me their name.

Solved. Had 3 slightly bent crank position teeth on the flywheel. Thanks to Alpine Auto Works in Calgary for the diagnosis. Pulled the tranny again. Compared new flywheel to ols. Found 3 teeth after the gap bent in about .25mm to 1mm. Straightened teeth and thru car back together. All is now good. Looking forward to a great summer of driving. Peace Ou
