there is a 99 Boxster at a shop i know, well maintained with 94k miles. What issues are lurking in this model?

Those of a 16 year old car with 94k miles. Age and wear. Suspension, plastic oil and coolant parts. AOS. There are 200k plus mile Boxsters of that era still running intensive track schedules and daily driven.

Is the '99 a particularly bad year, no. Best of the 2.5s. Mine was perfect but that was also 8 years and 60k miles less than the one you are approaching.

99 Boxster

I've got one - I think it a great car.
Minimal electronics (that is, cable throttle instead of drive by wire , etc) Makes it easy to work on. I've had mine 3 years and all it's wanted is oil, filters and tires. 2.5 is a great engine - no bad habits...just remember that when you go on one of the Porsche Club outings, you'll be near the end of the line, after being passed by the "big block" cars
No worries - you'll still have fun and will be welcomed as a Porsche owner!!
Check it out carefully and get a good price...then have fun.

The '99 engine is robust enough that it is the basis for the Spec Boxster racing class. No internal mods allowed. The idea is compete against yourself and your competitors, not against big block cars.

If it is in a shop, ask WHY it is there. ASK AND DEMAND ALL of the maintenance records. IMS replacement and lube oil change history. BRAND OF OIL AND WEIGHT. If you change oil brands, make sure that you flush the engine prior to replacing the engine oil brand. I have a 99 where the engine went bad do to IMS failure. Replaced engine with a used one and immediately replaced the IMS bearing. Car runs fine and had a few track DE events with it. NO PROBLEMS.
I also have a 97 that I bought with a bad engine. Replaced engine with a 3.6L. Engine went bad with an OIL STARVATION PROBLEM. built A 3.8L custom engine with all the BS that Porsche forgot about. I am braking it in. Just hope that this one lasts for awhile.
