rebuild/replace/upgrade??

<sigh> ... It appears the 2.7 motor on my 02 boxster base has drank the kool aid... it wasn't the ims but its definitely something internal that has given out...its currently undergoing diagnostics to figure out exactly what has failed but regardless i'm looking at a new motor or a rebuild.... so my question to all of you out there is do I rebuild the 2.7 or possibly upgrade to the Carrera motor for the horsepower gain? .. anyone have an idea what an 02 boxster base is worth with a blown engine?.. what would a boxster with a Carrera motor be worth?? .. I know I'll never get my money back out of things but don't know whether to cut my losses or stick it out and try to make something good out of things... opinions are greatly appreciated

Condition, options, mileage, mods? All would affect value.

Some guesses....

For a base with a rolling chassis with 60k miles and the engine in pieces, maybe $3k.

The same car with everything perfect and a running 2.7 engine, maybe $11k.

With an IMS, maybe another $1k.

With a 3.4, maybe the same due to uncertainty about future maintenance. Mods can even hurt the value of the car.

So to come out even you can put ~$8k into the total costs of the diagnosis of the current engine and its repair, the replacement motor, its installation, etc and be OK.

My sympathy. Every one we lose hurts.

Thanks, mikefocke!

you should consider another 2.7 motor and replace the bearing before it goes in. Probably the cheapest way to go. If you still want to sell after that, at least you'll have a running car to sell and you market it with the IMS replaced.

A list of salvage yards is here should you decide to go that route.

Thanks, Guys... Turns out it was the IMS afterall <go figure, lol>
I'm going to put her away for now until I find the right candidate for replacement.
Thanks for the input and keep it mind
